Linn-Mar belts Jeff as Olson sits

PDF

Linn-Mar guard Jordan Bohannon was disappointed Friday night when he came out for warmups and learned that Jacob Olson would not be playing for Jefferson due to a sprained ankle.

The J-Hawks were disappointed, too.

Bohannon popped in a smooth 20 points and the Lions waltzed past the J-Hawks, 61-33, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at the Jefferson gym.

Olson, one of the premier point guards in the league, sprained his ankle in practice Thursday and watched the game in street clothes.

Bohannon, a promising sophomore, had prepared all week to face the talented J-Hawk senior. He was disappointed to see Olson in slacks and a dress shirt.

"To be honest I was a little mad, because I really wanted to go up against him," Bohannon said. "I like to play against the best players and the best teams.

"I was really looking forward to playing against him. I was preparing for it all week."

The game was a mismatch with Olson on the bench. Jefferson did not make a single field goal in the second period and went more than 15 minutes without a bucket in the second and third quarters.

Olson is Jefferson's point guard and leading scorer. The J-Hawks struggled mightily without him.

"Obviously that makes a big difference for them," said Linn-Mar Coach Chris Robertson. "That's their go-to guy, their leader. That makes it tough on them.

"He's definitely one of the top players and one of the top guards in the league. It's disappointing that he didn't get to be out there.

"Like I told our guys, that can't change our approach," said Robertson. "We've still got to be aggressive when we go out there. We were a team that needed a win and we needed to go after it."

The Lions (1-2, 1-0) built an imposing 50-15 lead late in the third period with Bohannon and Nic Uhlir leading the way with their 3-point shooting. Bohannon made four 3-pointers in the game and Uhlir hit three triples en route to 11 points.

Jefferson Coach Stu Ordman knew it would be tough without Olson, but expected more from his club.

"I thought we should have done better than we performed," he said. "I thought our guys should have had a better attitude towards working together and helping each other on defense, moving the ball and getting better shots.

"I hope it's a learning experience, because we certainly got beat in all phases of the game."

Linn-Mar pelted Jefferson, 18-2, in the second quarter to grab a 36-12 lead at halftime, with Bohannon notching 15 points for the Lions by intermission. Both of Jefferson's points in the second quarter came on free throws.

It was more of the same in the third period as the Lions spurted to their 50-15 bulge. Jefferson did not make a field goal in the third quarter until Lucas Larson popped in a 3-pointer with 22 seconds left in the stanza.

Tyler Konigsmark led Jefferson (1-3, 0-2) with 11 points. Larson scored nine points.

Linn-Mar shot 11 for 21 on 3-pointers for 52.4 percent. Jefferson shot 10 for 39 overall from the field for 25.6 percent. The Lions dominated the backboards, 38-23.
