Kohawks find new home with MSR

Welcome aboard, Kohawks.

We're happy to have you on our team.

As we announced last week, the Metro Sports Report has added Coe College to the growing list of schools and teams that we're covering on our website.

We activated all the Coe tabs on the website Sunday. And although there's not much there yet, there will be soon.

For Coe fans who are new to the Metro Sports Report, you'll find the tab for Coe College near the top of the home page with all the other schools and teams. Click on Coe and you'll go to the Coe home page. Once there, you'll find the dropdown box for all 19 of Coe's sports where it says "Select a Coe team."

We'll jump into the winter sports this week as we catch up with men's basketball, women's basketball, wrestling, men's swimming, women's swimming, men's indoor track and women's indoor track. There are lots of good stories to tell and we plan to start telling them.

The Coe wrestling team, ranked No.9 in the country in NCAA Division III, compiled a 1-2 record against stiff competition at the National Duals in Des Moines this weekend. Coach John Oostendorp's club topped No.20 Springfield, 34-6, but then lost tight matches against No.2 Augsburg (16-15) and No.12 Luther (22-18).

Ethan Ball, ranked No.7 at 174 pounds, collected the 100th victory of his career at the National Duals, becoming only the 10th wrestler in school history to reach the century mark.

The Coe men's basketball team raised its records to 9-4 overall and 1-1 in the Iowa Conference Saturday with a 68-54 victory over Simpson. The Kohawks are averaging a healthy 75.8 points per game and have four of the top-20 scorers in the league with JT Vonderhaar (13.7), Max Schmarzo (12.6), Andrew Wirth (12.2) and Matt Daoust (10.7).

The women's basketball squad fell to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in the league with a 73-69 loss to Simpson Saturday in the other half of the twinbill at Eby Fieldhouse. Mickey Hansche scored 20 points and Mary Halvorson added 19 for the Kohawks, but it wasn't quite enough.

The men's and women's swimming teams competed at the Luther Invitational on Saturday and turned in some good times. Kenni Sterns garnered four top-10 showings in the women's competition and Lindsey Meade had three top-10 finishes. On the men's side, Gabe Etzel placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke and was sixth in the 50 breaststroke.

The men's and women's track and field teams will begin their indoor seasons this Saturday at the Sol Butler Invitational in Dubuque.

We plan to stay on top of all the sports news at Coe and give Kohawk fans the type of in-depth coverage they want. We invite you to come along and let us know how we're doing. We also welcome your story ideas.

The new adventure begins.
