No.8 Warriors hold off scrappy Lions

PDF

Dani Franklin is proud of what her mother accomplished during the six-player era of girls basketball at Cedar Rapids Washington in the 1970's, but she prefers the five-player game just fine.

"I like the game the way it is now. Definitely," she said Friday night.

Franklin made consecutive 3-pointers in the first half to fuel a 15-0 run and the Class 5A eight-ranked Warriors held off Linn-Mar, 62-56, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Washington.

Deb Franklin scored 1,394 points for the Warriors back in the days when players never crossed mid-court. Dani Franklin has pumped in 1,055 points now, making them a rare mother/daughter combo with more than 1,000 apiece.

They didn't have 3-point shots when Deb Franklin played the game.

"It was a different game than it is now," said Dani Franklin, a 6-foot-1 senior who made four 3-pointers Friday. "I've heard the rules, but I've never seen it or played it."

Franklin led all Class 5A players in scoring at 22.2 points when the night began. She scored 14 points in the first half when the Warriors grabbed a 32-19 lead at intermission, but Linn-Mar held her to just three points in the second half by playing a zone defense with a chaser on Franklin much of the time.

The Lions (10-8) gave themselves a chance in the second half and rallied within 44-42 and 49-48, but they never got over the hump. Both Sommer twins - Katie and Kristie - got in foul trouble and that hurt the visitors.

Katie Sommer picked up her third foul with 5:37 left in the second period and got her fourth personal with three seconds left in the third period, leading to extended periods on the bench.

Kristie Sommer fouled out with 41 seconds remaining in the game and the Lions trailing 59-56.

"Yeah, it sucks," Katie Sommer said of the foul problems. "I wish I was on the court that second quarter, but we hung with them. I had confidence in the bench and the team."

Katie Sommer finished with 16 points and Kristie Sommer had 18. They nearly negated Washington's dynamic duo of Franklin and Aleena Hobbs, who combined for 35 points.

Linn-Mar grabbed an early 11-3 lead, then fell behind by 15 points at 32-17 late in the second quarter. The Lions outscored the hosts, 37-30, in the second half.

"I'll tell you what, the second half I tought they played gritty basketball," said Linn-Mar Coach Mike Brandt. "I thought they went out and didn't hang their heads. They just decided to go out and play the kind of basketball we can play."

Brandt dug into his bench for key minutes with Katie Sommer in early foul trouble.

"I thought everybody that went on that floor in the second half really battled hard and did a nice job of trying to stop their two best," said Brandt, referring to Franklin and Hobbs. "They got points, but I thought they had to really work for it."

Olivia Montague hit a long 3-pointer to pull Linn-Mar within 44-42 with 6:10 left in the game. Washington (14-3) spurted ahead again by seven points, thanks to a 3-pointer by MJ Kamin and a layup by Hobbs, but the Lions roared back to within 49-48.

Katie Sommer missed a three throw that would have tied the game, 49-49, and Franklin responded with a 3-pointer for her only points of the second half to make it 52-48. Franklin fouled out with 63 seconds left and the Warriors holding a 58-51 lead.

Montague hit another clutch 3-pointer to pull Linn-Mar within 59-56 with 48 seconds remaining, but the rally ended there. Jasmyne Jones made three free throws in the final 41 seconds to seal the victory for Washington.
