Jones helps Warriors fend off Hempstead

Tiny track star Jasmyne Jones took just one shot from the floor Saturday night in the Washington girls 70-56 Class 5A regional semifinal win over Dubuque Hempstead.

But it was a big one.

Down 17 points and looking all but done at the start of the third quarter, the visiting Mustangs sprinted all the way back to within 50-46 early in the fourth.

But sandwiched between two 3-pointers by Dani Franklin, Jones swished from behind the arc her only attempt of the night.

When Kiki West-Doyle tipped in her own miss seconds later, the Warriors were suddenly back up by 15.

In a little over a minute they scored 11 straight points.

“Those were huge, Washington Coach Frank Howell said of the three 3-pointers in a row.

“Things look a lot prettier when the ball goes in the hole like that.”

Jones, the water bug-like point guard who will run track at Wartburg College next year, said Hempstead got back in the game when they switched to a trapping defense that befuddled the Warriors for much of the third quarter.

“They really started attacking us,” she said. “We were getting buzzed.”

Up to then, Washington's own swarming style of play was working to perfection.

As has been the custom this season, Howell substituted in droves of three and four at a time in the first half with 13 players seeing some action.

“The idea,” he pointed out, “is to keep the tempo high and get as much energy going as we can. We try to wear the other team down.”

Jones said when the first wave of subs came in, “It seemed to give us a spark and we went on a little run.”

At halftime, Washington was up 32-20 and seemed to be coasting.

As always, seniors Aleena Hobbs and Dani Franklin provided most of the firepower.

Hobbs was a whirling dervish driving to the basket and pulling down rebounds.

“I was trying to be aggressive to get some fouls and open things up for others,” she said. “and everybody was knocking down their shots.”

The always-hustling Hobbs had 12 of her 15 total points in the first. For the game she led her team with 11 rebounds.

Sharpshooter Franklin, meanwhile, sank seven of 10 shots, including five of seven from 3-point range for a game high 26 points.

“All the credit,” she said, “goes to my teammates. They were the ones that kept giving me screens and getting me the ball.”

As the eighth-ranked Warriors (18-4) prepare now to face ninth-ranked Southeast Polk (16-6) Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Prairie High School in the regional finals, Howell said he's glad to have one scare out of the way.

“We were fortunate that we kept he lead tonight when they made their run,” he said. “Then we were able to settle in for the win.

“That's what it's all about now.: Survive and advance.”
