Amanda Sahm wins Metro Spotlight Award

Marion junior Amanda Sahm is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Sahm averaged 13.3 points and 6.5 rebounds for the Marion High School basketball team this year. She also collected 61 assists, 34 steals and eight blocked shots.

The Indians finished with a modest 6-16 record, but they did not have any seniors on the squad and are optimistic about next year.

Sahm is also an accomplished volleyball player. She helped Marion finish with a 25-16 record last season and ranked second in Class 4A with 949 assists.

Here is our Question-&-Answer session with Amanda Sahm:

MSR: What has been your favorite individual highlight in sports?

AMANDA: My biggest individual highlight happened this basketball season when I had my career-high 26 points against Solon. The team won a roughly fought game. It was a lot of fun! I am most happy about being chosen as one of the team captains for both volleyball and basketball, though. That means a lot more to me.

MSR: What has been your favorite team highlight in sports?

AMANDA: My biggest team highlight in sports was when my club volleyball team, Iowa Rockets, won nationals in Columbus, Ohio. It was two years ago and one of the greatest experiences I have ever had.

MSR: Who has had the biggest influence on your sports career?

AMANDA: My parents have a big influence on my sports career. They always encouraged me to try many different sports. They gave me their competitive genes and taught me to always give 110 percent - every play, every game, every sport. Without their support, I wouldn't be able to have such great experiences with sports.

MSR: What are your future goals in sports?

AMANDA: My future goals are to attend a four-year college, Division 1 or Division 2, to play volleyball.

MSR: What are your favorite classes in school?

AMANDA: My favorite classes in school are the sciences. I love biology and psychology.

MSR: What has been your favorite community service project?

AMANDA: My favorite community service project is One Day in May. It's a day that I get to help organize for the whole school, 600-plus kids, to go out into the community and volunteer. It's Marion's way of beautifying our town and giving back to the community.
