Thomas, Van Steensel join Kernels

Outfielder Ivory Thomas and right-handed pitcher Todd Van Steensel have joined the Cedar Rapids Kernels from Extended Spring Training, the parent Minnesota Twins announced Saturday.

The Twins selected Thomas in the 34th round of the 2013 First Year Player Draft from Cal State Dominguez Hills. He played for the GCL Twins in 2013, batting .255 with three RBIs in 16 games.

The Twins signed Van Steensel as a non-drafted free agent on Feb. 6, 2014. He played last season for the Sydney Blue Sox of the Australian Baseball League, posting an 0-1 record and 3.50 ERA in 15 relief appearances. In 18 innings he allowed 18 hits and 11 runs (seven earned) with 10 walks and 22 strikeouts.

With Saturday's transactions, the Kernels' roster is at the maximum of 25 active players, with four players currently on the DL and one player on the Restricted List.
