Kernels handed soggy loss by Cougars

For five innings, Tuesday night’s game between the Cedar Rapids Kernels and the Kane County Cougars looked like it would be a copy of Monday night’s rain-shortened contest.

Like the night before, the Kernels scored a run first and held on while light rains threatened to end the game early.

But unlike Monday, the serious rain held off and the two teams played the full nine innings. That allowed the Cougars to claw back, scoring once in the sixth inning and again in the seventh.

Kane County held on for a 2-1 win over Cedar Rapids in front of what remained of a sparse crowd of 607 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium, snapping the Kernels' four-game winning streak.

After Kernels designated hitter Mitch Garver’s one-out double in the fourth inning, outfielder Zack Larson continued his hot clutch hitting with an RBI single to put the Kernels on top early.

Larson is hitting at a .400 clip with runners on base and his 13 RBIs are second only to Garver’s team-leading 16 among Kernels hitters. Despite the extra productivity with men on, Larson said he’s not doing anything different in those situations.

“I just barrel it up and put a good swing on it,” he said. “I try to do that every at-bat.”

Garver racked up three hits, in addition to scoring the Kernels’ only run.

Cedar Rapids rallied in the ninth inning with Garver’s leadoff single, followed by Larson’s base on balls. But Cougars reliever Zack Godley struck out Bryan Haar, Ivory Thomas and B.K. Santy in order to end the threat and the game.

“We pitched real well,” Kernels Manager Jake Mauer said. “We got out of a couple jams, got some ground balls. Got some big double-play balls. We had a couple times where we threatened and were just a base hit away from taking control of that game, but just couldn’t come through with it.

“It’s just unfortunate,” added the skipper. “You get the possible winning run on and go strikeout, strikeout, strikeout. Not too good.”

Kernels starting pitcher Ethan Mildren worked in and out of trouble through the first four innings and set the Cougars down in order in the fifth, but he gave up a leadoff triple to Kane County’s Jake Hannemann in the sixth inning and saw Hannemann score two batters later on a ground out to tie the game at 1-1.

The Cougars’ second run came off Cedar Rapids relief pitcher Brandon Bixler (1-1) in the seventh frame and was the first run given up by the lefty this season. Alex Muren finished up with two scoreless innings of relief work.

The Kernels and Cougars will square off again Wednesday night at 6:35.
