Bandits bump off Kernels again

DAVENPORT - The Quad Cities River Bandits hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning to come from behind and down the Kernels, 5-2, before 5,494 fans at Modern Woodmen Park Saturday night.

The Kernels (22-27) have lost four straight games and are five games below the .500 mark for the first time this season.

Cedar Rapids led 2-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but the River Bandits (24-23) tallied four runs for a 5-2 lead.

With two on and one away, Conrad Gregor drilled a three-run home run to right-center to put Quad Cities in front 4-2. It was Gregor's first home run of the season and scored Jack Mayfield and Brett Phillips.

Tyler White, the next batter, hit a towering home run that got over the wall in left field to extend the River Bandits' lead to 5-2. It was White's second blast of the season.

Ethan Mildren (0-3) took the loss for the Kernels. He went 5 1/3 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits while striking out one and walking two. Mildren sailed through the first five innings, allowing just one unearned run on two hits, before running into trouble in the sixth inning.

The Kernels scored their two runs in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead. Jason Kanzler singled into center and Bo Altobelli was hit by a pitch.

A ground out moved both into scoring position and allowed Kanzler to score on an infield single by Engelb Vielma. Ryan Walker's RBI ground out brought in Altobelli and gave the Kernels the lead.

Brandon Bixler went 1 2/3 innings in relief for the Kernels, allowing no runs on one hit. He struck out one and walked none. Hudson Boyd added a 1-2-3 eighth inning with a pop out and two ground outs.

The Kernels travel to Beloit, opening a three-game series at Pohlman Field Sunday at 4 p.m. Josue Montanez (1-2, 8.13) gets the start for the Kernels.
