Romero, Thorpe join Kernels

The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Minnesota Twins announced Tuesday that right-handed pitcher Fernando Romero and left-handed pitcher Lewis Thorpe will join the Kernels from Extended Spring Training and that pitchers Derrick Penilla and Felix Jorge have been assigned to Extended Spring Training.

Brad Steil, Director of Minor League Operations for the Twins, announced the moves.

The Twins signed Romero as a non-drafted free agent on Nov. 4, 2011. He spent last season with the GCL Twins where he posted a 2-0 record and 1.60 ERA in 12 games (six starts). In 45 innings, he allowed 32 hits and 12 runs (eight earned) with 13 walks and 47 strikeouts.

The Twins signed Thorpe as a non-drafted free agent on July 12, 2012. He spent last season with the GCL Twins where he posted a 4-1 record and 2.05 ERA in 12 games (eight starts).

In 44 innings, he allowed 32 hits and 13 runs (10 earned) with six walks and 64 strikeouts. He was ranked as the Twins' No.7 Top Prospect by Baseball America and the No.8 Top Prospect by both MLB.com and Baseball Prospectus.

 

Penilla appeared in seven games (three starts) for the Kernels, posting a 1-2 record and 5.64 ERA. In 22.1 innings, he allowed 25 hits and 16 runs (14 earned) with 10 walks and 22 strikeouts. Jorge appeared in 12 games (seven starts) for the Kernels, posting a 2-5 record and 9.00 ERA. In 39 innings, he allowed 57 hits and 40 runs (39 earned) with 20 walks and 23 strikeouts.

The Kernels begin a six-game road trip Wednesday with games at Wisconsin and Kane County. They return to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Tuesday, June 10 and open a six-game homestand with games against Quad Cities and Burlington.
