Prairie girls nip Wash in Shootout

Hannah Kousheh had several chances to score goals for the Prairie Hawks against Washington Wednesday night in the Class 3A regional semifinals, but she was unable to connect during 80 minutes of regulation or 20 minutes of overtime.

"I was getting quite frustrated," she confessed later.

It had a happy ending for Kousheh and the Hawks.

Prairie nudged Washington, 2-1, in a PK Shootout at John Wall Field and Hannah got poetic justice by scoring the game-winner in the Shootout.

The ninth-ranked Hawks (13-3) will play at No.4 Dubuque Hempstead Monday night in the regional finals, with the winner advancing to the Class 3A state tournament.

"I'm just happy," said Kousheh, who is Prairie's leading scorer with 17 goals. "We're getting closer and closer to the final game to go to state.

"We deserve it," she said. "It's a great group of girls. We all fought for each other in every one of these games."

Washington took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by Maggie Clair, with an assist by Katie Kigin. Prairie tied the match, 1-1, with 35:51 left in the second half on a left-footed shot by Hayley Moyle and an assist by Cayla Renwick.

Both teams had their chances in the second half and both overtimes, but it stayed 1-1 and went to the Shootout. Prairie outscored Washington in the Shootout, 4-3, with Kousheh going last for the Hawks and connecting.

"I knew she was going to make it right away," said Prairie goalie Kendra Gaskill. "Because in practice all the time, she shoots on me and hits the same spot every single time.

"I knew what she was going to do and I knew she was going to make it."

Kousheh approached the ball at the 4-yard line in a seemingly casual manner, took a glance at Washington keeper Hannah Schroeder and cooly booted the ball into the right side of the net.

Schroeder sat unhappily on the ground with her hands on her head after the shot ended Washington's season. Her teammates quickly rallied to her side and consoled her as best they could.

Meanwhile, the Prairie Hawks celebrated making the regional finals.

"It was a very exciting match, oh my gosh," said Kousheh. "Honestly, we owe it all to Kendra in the PK. I don't know what to say."

Both teams had five chances to score in the PK Shootout. Gaskill made a diving save on Kigin, who was Washington's third shooter, which turned out to be a pivotal part of the showdown.

The Warriors missed another shot that went high over the goal, then Kousheh booted home the winner.

"Oh my gosh. So nerve-wracking! So nerve-wracking," said Gaskill. "But it just helps to have everybody here supporting me while it's going on."

Gaskill said she did not have any special strategy or insight into where the Warriors might aim in the Shootout.

"I kind of just wing it," she said. "I just guess. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't."

MJ Kamin, who finished second in the Class 5A state golf tournament Tuesday, rejoined the Washington soccer team Wednesday and gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead as the first booter in the Shootout.

Brittney England countered for Prairie and it was 1-1.

Annee Cooper scored to give Washington a 2-1 lead, but Mackenzie Serbousek answered for Prairie to make it 2-2 after two shooters for both teams.

Gaskill stopped Kigin, but Ali Morrow's attempt for Prairie sailed over the goal and it stayed 2-2 after three turns for both clubs.

Olivia Altemeier missed for Washington and Anna Whetstone gave the Hawks a 3-2 lead with a goal in the upper left part of the net.

Kelly King scored for the Warriors, making it 3-3, but Prairie had the last shot and Kousheh made it count.

New Prairie Coach Doug Graham had the pleasure of working with all-state forward Kayla Armstrong during his years at Xavier and said Kousheh has similar skills.

"She's amazing," said Graham. "She's had an outstanding season."

Prairie won only three games last season, but now the Hawks are 13-3 and headed to the regional finals with the most victories in school history, according to Graham.

Kousheh credits the team's success to their new coach.

"He is one of the best motivators I have honestly ever had coaching me," she said. "I think that is definitely what has gotten us so far."

Graham returned the compliment.

"These girls have done a magnificent job," he said. "I'm so proud of them."
