No. 3 Cougars thrive with young hurlers

The Kennedy Cougars and their "Kiddie Corps" struck again Tuesday night.

Coach Bret Hoyer used three more underclassmen on the mound as the third-ranked Cougars defeated Prairie, 6-2, at the Prairie diamond to sweep the two-game series.

Junior Sawyer Neuhaus gave Kennedy four strong innings, sophomore Tyler Dralle tossed two frames and junior Blake Hargens sealed the deal in the seventh inning.

Kennedy raised its records to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the Mississippi Valley Conference with a rotation built entirely of kids.

The four-man starting rotation of Zach Daniels, Sammy Lizarraga, Hargens and Neuhaus is comprised entirely of juniors.

Kennedy took control of the game with a four-run outburst in the second inning. Derek Jacobus lined a bases-loaded single for the first run and two more runs scored on the play due to an error in the outfield.

Jacobus scored on an errant pickoff attempt and the Cougars had a 4-0 cushion.

Kennedy made it 5-0 in the third inning on a perfect safety squeeze bunt by Ben Sass, driving in Matt Stevens.

Prairie (4-5, 3-2) closed the gap to 5-2 in the fifth inning, but Dralle wiggled out of trouble after relieving Neuhaus to keep his club in the lead. Kennedy scored an insurance run in the seventh inning on a single by Lizarraga that plated Stevens.

Trey Beckman went 3-for-3 for Prairie and also was hit by a pitch. Nick Mougin had two hits for the Hawks.

Stevens went 2-for-4 for Kennedy.
