2 pitchers join Kernels; Pineda demoted

The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Minnesota Twins announced Monday that right-handed pitchers Chih-Wei Hu and Jake Reed will join the Kernels from Elizabethton in the Appalachian League.

Hu, 20, is from Taiwan. Reed, 21, is from La Mesa, Calif.

The Twins selected Reed in the fifth round of the 2014 draft from the University of Oregon. In four relief appearances at Elizabethton, he had no record and three saves in six innings, allowing one hit and striking out eight.

In 31 relief appearances at Oregon this year, he posted a 4-1 record, 1.95 ERA and 13 saves, allowing 22 hits and nine runs (eight earned) with 15 walks and 34 strikeouts in 37 innings.

The Twins signed Hu as a non-drafted free agent on Aug. 3, 2012. He spent last season with the GCL Twins, posting a 2-0 record and 2.45 ERA in 12 games (five starts).

In 36.2 innings, he allowed 28 hits and 11 runs (10 earned) with eight walks and 39 strikeouts. In three starts this season at Elizabethton, he has a 1-0 record and 1.69 ERA, allowing seven hits and three runs (all earned) with two walks and 16 strikeouts in 16 innings.

In other news Monday, Kernels outfielder Jeremias Pineda has been activated from the 7-day disabled list and assigned to Elizabethton.

Pineda went on the DL April 21 with a fracture of the left wrist/hamate. In 15 games for the Kernels, he hit .163 (8-for-49) with a home run and six RBIs.
