Surging Marion Indians sweep Benton

The Marion Indians got off to a relatively slow start this season, but they are picking up steam at the right time of year.

Marion swept Benton Community, 4-3 and 6-1, in a Wamac Conference twinbill at Marion Friday.

The victories lifted the Indians to 21-12 overall and 17-9 in league games.

The first game was suspended June 16 with the score tied, 3-3, in the bottom of the seventh inning. They resumed the game from that point and the Indians scored in the bottom of the eighth inning to claim the victory.

Maverick Miller led off the eighth with a single and was bunted to second base by Logan Fuller. Owen Carstensen entered the game as a pinch-runner for Miller and scored the game-winning run on a single by David Kuhn.

Miller had three hits in the 4-3 victory. Quinn Cannoy pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts.

Miller collected four more hits for Marion in the second game. Fuller and Cannoy had two hits and Cannoy had three RBIs.

Cannoy, Kuhn and Caleb Stekl pitched for Marion in the second game and combined for 10 strikeouts. Kuhn was credited with the win.
