Hobbs, Hansche spark Coe to easy win

For awhile Wednesday afternoon, it looked like Aleena Hobbs and Mickey Hansche were engaged in their own little game of H-O-R-S-E at Eby Fieldhouse.

Hobbs would hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key, then Hansche would connect from a similar spot. Hobbs would drill a 3-pointer from the corner, then Hansche would follow suit. Hobbs would hit a triple from the wing, then Hansche would sink one, too.

You almost expected one of the Kohawks to climb into the bleachers and bank in a 3-pointer off the scoreboard, but it never came to that.

Their personal game of H-O-R-S-E ended in a tie as they finished with four 3-pointers and 18 points apiece, helping Coe collect an easy 74-41 victory over Carleton College in the final tuneup before the Iowa Conference race begins next week.

"Our team was very active on offense and creating shots for everyone," said Hobbs, a freshman from Cedar Rapids Washington. "They were having trouble shifting on defense, I think, and we were finding the open shots."

The Kohawks finished 11 of 20 on 3-pointers for a slick 55 percent, the third-best percentage in school history and the sixth-most triples in a single game.

"I think we shot the ball extremely well," said Coe Coach Randi Henderson. "When that happens and things are going your way, everything looks good.

"We have some kids that can shoot it and today they got a lot of open looks. We happened to find our shooters and take advantage of it."

The H & H girls were especially hot. Hobbs went 4-for-4 from long distance and Hansche was 4-for-6. Jenna Lehman, Logan Lynch and Courteney McCrary also popped in 3-pointers for the Kohawks.

Hansche holds the school record with eight 3-pointers in a single game and is a constant threat on the perimeter, but the Iowa City High grad also made some strong moves to the hoop Wednesday. "I'm working on being more aggressive to the basket," she said.

Hobbs, a 5-foot-10 power forward, had made only twelve 3-pointers in the first 10 games before hitting four against Carleton. She'll give the Kohawks another outside threat in league games if she keeps it up.

"It would stretch it out and create opportunities for everybody else on the floor to have open shoots too," she noted. "We had a lot of people knock down shots today. We were on fire."

Henderson said opponents tend to focus their defense against 6-2 center Megan Hayes near the basket and against Hansche at the 3-point line, so having Hobbs as a third major threat would make the Kohawks harder to guard.

Hobbs is shooting 16 of 35 from 3-point range for 45.7 percent.

"She definitely has the ability to do that," said Henderson. "It's a tough jump going into college and understanding the pace and when the shot is open. But she's growing up quickly and it's fun to watch."

Hansche is shooting 31 of 73 on 3-pointers for 42.5 percent.

Coe jumped to a 35-12 lead in the first half on consecutive 3-pointers by Hansche and Hobbs and led 41-20 at intermission. Hobbs and Hansche began the second half with 3-pointers to make it 47-22 and the Kohawks were on their way to a blowout victory, grabbing a 40-point lead at 69-29.

Allie Wirth finished with 12 rebounds, six points and four assists for Coe (7-4). Lehman contributed seven points and seven rebounds. McCrary finished with nine points.

Skylar Tsutsui scored 16 points for Carleton (3-6).
