Kennedy names 9 for Hall of Fame

Kennedy High School will induct nine new members into the Cougar Athletic Hall of Fame Friday night.

Ashley (Hamblin) Jay, Dawn (Hajek) Buckheister, Stephanie (Jamerson) Albrecht, Lori (Rose) Collins, Lynette (Wilson) Rohrs, Danny Bales, Roger Bir, Derek Hinke and Mike Morrison will be honored at a reception in the high school cafeteria at 4:45 p.m. with the induction ceremony at 5:15.

They will be introduced to the crowd prior to the boys basketball game against Iowa City High Friday night.

Jay (2005) was an elite soccer player at Kennedy. She was named the Athlete of the Year in the Mississippi Valley Conference for three straight years and set school recors for most goals in a game (6), most goals in a season (39), most assists in a game (6), most assists in a career (24), most goals in a career (83) and most assists in a career (37). She played college soccer at the University of Missouri.

Buckheister (1995) was a three-sport athlete in soccer, basketball and softball, earning a string of conference, Metro and state honors along the way. She competed in all three sports at Ellsworth Community College and Grand View University.

Albrecht (2003) competed in volleyball, basketball and track. She was named Kennedy's Female Athlete of the Year in 2003.

Collins (1985) participated in volleyball, basketball and track. She was named Kennedy's Female Athlete of the Year in 1985 and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1986-90.

Rohrs (2003) competed in volleyball and track and was a state champion in the 400 meter dash. She competed in track at Northern Iowa.

Bales (2004) was one of the top pitchers in Kennedy history. He holds the school record for career strikeouts (351), career wins (26) and career saves (11). He was named the 2004 Louisville Slugger and Gatorade Player of the Year in Iowa.

Bir (1969) competed in football, wrestling and baseball. He became Kennedy's first full-ride Division I athlete, playing football for the Indiana Hoosiers before a 38-year military career.

Hinke (2004) played baseball, football and track. He set a school record for receptions and made all-state in football. He also set school baseball records for most hits and RBIs in a season while being named all-state. He played baseball at Johnson County Community College and Grand Valley State.

Morrison (1992) competed in baseball, football and track. He was a member of the 4x400 relay that won a title at the Drake Relays. He was named all-state on offense and defense in football and played college football for Air Force and Northern Iowa.
