RoughRiders top Madison in Shootout

The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders fell briefly out of first place in the Eastern Conference of the USHL Friday night, but they quickly stormed back to the top of the standings before the night was over.

The RoughRiders topped Madison, 2-1, in a Shootout before 3,378 fans at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

Mitch Oglevie scored the winning goal for the RoughRiders in the Shootout and Ben Blacker played a strong game in goal, turning aside 35 of 36 shots in the defensive struggle.

Youngstown defeated Sioux Falls Friday night, 7-3, to raise its record to 30-13-5 for 65 points and temporarily move ahead of Cedar Rapids in the Eastern Conference standings. The RoughRiders responded with their clutch victory a short while later, giving Cedar Rapids a 33-16-0 mark for 66 points and moving the Riders back into first place in the tight race.

Madison took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Mitch Hults, but that was the only goal they got all night against Blacker and the stingy Cedar Rapids defense.

Charlie Curti scored for Cedar Rapids in the second period to tie the game, 1-1, on a power play with an assist from Dylan McLaughlin. The game was still tied, 1-1, after three periods and neither club scored in the five-minute overtime.

Madison did not score on its first attempt in the Shootout, but Oglevie connected for Cedar Rapids for a 1-0 lead. Madison did not score on its second attempt, but neither did Cedar Rapids. Madison came up empty on its third attempt and that was the game as the RoughRiders won the Shootout, 1-0, and won the game 2-1.

Madison fell to 19-18-9 for 47 points.

The RoughRiders host Green Bay at the Ice Arena Saturday night.
