Linn-Mar quarterback Ryan Schmidt has accepted an offer to join the Iowa Hawkeyes as a preferred walk-on, Linn-Mar Coach Bob Forsyth confirmed Thursday night.

Forsyth said Schmidt visited Iowa this week and announced his decision Thursday.

Schmidt is a big quarterback at 6-foot-6 and 230 pounds. Forsythe said he will begin his college career as a quarterback.

Schmidt completed 56.5 percent of his passes last season for 1,541 yards and 14 touchdowns, with only three interceptions. He also ran for 658 yards and 21 TDs.

Schmidt was named the Player of the Year on the All-Metro Team and also was a first team selection in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Linn-Mar won the Valley Division title in the MVC and finished with a 9-2 record after reaching the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.
