Mustangs suffer 2 tough losses

The Mount Mercy baseball team dropped a pair of one-run games to William Penn Saturday in a Midwest Collegiate Conference doubleheader at the Xavier High School field.

William Penn won the first game, 2-1, in 11 innings. The Statesmen took the nightcap, 4-3.

Mount Mercy wasted strong pitching performances in both games. Austin Czerwiec pitched 10 innings and allowed only one run in the opener. Ryan Flaherty tossed seven innings in relief in the second game and allowed only one unearned run.

Cody Bell had two hits for the Mustangs in the first game. Lance Daugherty drove in two runs in the second game as a pinch-hitter.

Mount Mercy fell to 13-16 overall and 4-7 in the league. William Penn raised its records to 16-15 overall and 6-5 in the conference.

The Mustangs collected only nine hits in the doubleheader.
