Mustangs deny Clarke share of title

PEOSTA - The Mount Mercy Mustangs trimmed Clarke, 5-4, in 12 innings Tuesday to deny the Crusaders a share of the Midwest Collegiate Conference baseball title at AJ Spiegel Park in Peosta.

Grand View and AIB tied for first place in the regular-season standings with 16-8 records. Clarke fell a game short at 15-9, thanks to Tuesday's loss to the Mustangs.

Mount Mercy scored twice in the top of the 12th inning on RBI singles by Patrick Haney and Cody Williams for a 5-3 lead. Clarke scored in the bottom of the 12th to make it 5-4, but Evan Boddicker got the final out for the Mustangs with two runners on base.

Haney went 3-for-6 and drove in two runs. Williams was 3-for-5. Jason Darichuk scored twice for Mount Mercy.

Austin Czerwiec pitched seven innings in relief for the Mustangs. Michael Hackett got the victory and Boddicker collected a save.

 

The victory lifted Mount Mercy to 19-24 overall and 10-14 in the conference.
