Hoyer wins 600th game with Kennedy

IOWA CITY - Cedar Rapids Kennedy baseball coach Bret Hoyer reached another milestone Friday night when the 10th-ranked Cougars swept No. 9 Iowa City West, 4-0 and 6-3, in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader.

The victories raised Hoyer's record at Kennedy to 601-295 in 23 years at the helm. His overall record is 665-333 in 26 campaigns, including three years at Iowa City Regina before moving to Kennedy.

Hoyer led Kennedy to the Class 4A state title in 2010 and has made 12 trips to the state tournament with the Cougars. He was inducted into the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2014.

 

Sammy Lizarraga pitched a three-hit shutout for Kennedy in the first game. He collected eight strikeouts and did not walk anyone.

Tyler Dralle went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs for the Cougars in Game 1. Matt Berst also drove in two runs.

Zach Daniels surrendered only one run in six innings for Kennedy in the nightcap. He struck out six batters, walked three and allowed three hits.

Daniels went 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs in the second game. Kyle Brewer was 2-for-3.

Kennedy raised its record to 11-4 with Friday's victories. Iowa City West fell to 13-9.
