J-Hawks roll by Davenport West, 62-21

PDF

They waited out one weather delay, then just as the game was about to kick off, Jefferson and Davenport West were sent back to the Kingston Stadium locker room for another delay.

The visiting Falcons probably wished they weren't allowed back after a mandatory 30-minute delay.

Jefferson speedster Manny Olutunde took the opening kickoff and sprinted 92 yards nearly untouched for a score that sent the J-Hawks on their way to a 27-point opening quarter and a 62-21 victory on a rainy Friday night at Kingston.

The game was barely two minutes old when the J-Hawks struck again on their first offensive play. A mishandled snap on a West punt attempt left the ball on the Falcon 40. Jared Eivins came out and lofted one down the sideline to rangy 6-foot-5 receiver Jalyn Stafford for a second score.

"Obviously Manny's kickoff return was big," Jefferson coach Brian Webb said. "He's one of our main guys."

Eivins, who later added a pair of touchdown runs, has been a key component as Jefferson ended up 3-1 in non-district play. Some thought with the loss of Jesse Furrow to graduation that the quarterback position might suffer. Eivins, who missed last season with a shoulder injury, has put those concerns to rest.

"It was a big start for us tonight and we needed that," Eivins said. "We put an emphasis on it in practice this week because we didn't get off to a great start last week (in a win over Davenport North)."

The message must have been received. Jefferson added two more scores -- a 5-yard run by Tavian Rashed, followed by a 4 yarder from Mason Short -- to lead 27-0 entering the second quarter. Short scored again, this time from 15 yards out midway through the second quarter and it appeared the J-Hawks were on their way to a continuous clock after halftime.

West (3-1) got a long return on the ensuing kickoff, all the way to the J-Hawk 19. Tailback Dot Combs went 19 yards on the next play to get West on the scoreboard.

"We gave up too many big plays on special teams," Webb said. "Special teams needs some work and there are some other things that need to get cleaned up, but overall we are pleased where we are entering district play."

Two plays after the Falcons scored, Valentino Green took a hand-off and outraced the West defense 66 yards to give the J-Hawks a 41-7 lead. A Ray Milem 52-yard scamper for Davenport came quickly after Green's score, making it 41-14 at halftime.

Evins scored twice on short runs before the end of the third quarter, the final one forcing the game to a continuous clock.

Reserve Tyler Unkel capped the Jefferson scoring with a 19-yard scamper in the final three minutes.

"We had warned the kids during the week that the weather could be an issue," Webb said. "We were used to it from our (season opener) Washington game. At that point, it all become a mental game. I thought we came out and maintained our focus really well.

For Eivins, Friday's win was another step in rebuilding the football program at Jefferson.

"It's a lot of fun playing with this team," he said. "It's a great time being the quarterback for this team and it is a lot of fun.

"Ever since freshman year when we came in we said we are going to be the ones who change the way things are," he said. "We have just kept striving to get better."

The J-Hawks will get a good idea how far they have come when they play No. 6 Kennedy next Friday at Kingston.

"Kennedy's got a great team," Webb said. "They can beat you in so many ways. We will have to ready to play and we have to limit our turnovers."
