Coe is double-trouble for Mustangs

PDF

Amazing. Phenomenal. Dangerous.

The Coe Kohawks are not a boastful group of guys, but those are some of the superlatives they used to describe their performance against Mount Mercy in a men's basketball game Tuesday Night at Eby Fieldhouse.

The Kohawks saw three players finish with double-doubles as they posted an impressive 95-82 victory over the Mustangs in a battle of collegiate neighbors from northeast Cedar Rapids.

The Kohawks featured crisp ball movement, terrific shooting, strong rebounding and solid defense.

"Absolutely amazing," said Marshall Shedeck, who finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocked shots. "This is probably the first game we've played where everything seemed to be clicking."

Matt Vonderhaar collected 27 points and 14 rebounds as the Kohawks lifted their record to 4-2. Point guard Jake Timm finished with 12 rebounds and 10 assists as he expertly directed the club.

Trevor Haaland popped in five 3-pointers and contributed 22 points and Matt Meyer added 14 points, five rebounds and four assists.

"I'm really proud of our guys," Coe coach Bryan Martin said. "This was a phenomenal performance against a high-quality basketball team.

"I told them after the game, I believed going in we were going to win the game, but never in a million years did I think we'd control it the way we did. It was just our night.

"The guys were clicking on all cylinders and executed everything we asked them to do."

The Kohawks dominated the backboards, 48-31, and beat the Mustangs at Eby Fieldhouse for the third straight time.

The Kohawks moved the ball around the perimeter with crisp passes, finding the open man for an outside shot or a drive to the basket. Everyone on the floor was a weapon and the Mustangs had trouble trying to guard everyone.

"It kind of all came together tonight," Vonderhaar said. "Offensively we were hitting shots, we were finishing at the rim. We were moving the ball really well and really playing good team offense.

"It's just five unselfish players out there."

Martin said the key was getting stops on defense. When the Kohawks get three stops in a row, they consider it a "shutout" and a key to victory. The goal is six "shutouts" per game and they got nine against the Mustangs.

"I don't want to be too boastful here, but we're a very dangerous team in transition," Martin said. "If we can get stops, we're going to find ways to get easy baskets in transition and that's the name of the game."

Timm is Coe's primary point guard, but Haaland was a point guard at Osage High School and Wayne State University before transferring to Coe this season. Haaland gives the Kohawks two point guards on the floor, along with mobile shooters like Vonderhaar, Shedeck and Meyer.

"When we move it, we're tough to guard," Haaland said.

"I think we played real well," he said. "That's a great team and well-coached. It's a big win for our program."

Coe used a 14-0 run to grab a 33-22 lead in the first half on its way to a 46-31 bulge at intermission. The Kohawks opened a pair of 18-point margins in the second half at 57-39 and 60-42, but Tre Wagner got hot for Mount Mercy and helped the Mustangs pull within eight points at 64-56.

The Mustangs got within eight again at 69-61, but that's as close as they got. The Kohawks went on a 10-1 spurt for a 79-62 advantage with 4:04 left to get out of potential trouble.

"We kept our composure and did what we had to do to hang onto that lead," Martin said.

"We're not the biggest team, but we have some guys with a lot of heart and a lot of skill," he said. "This is a big win for us."

Wagner led Mount Mercy (7-3) with 23 points. CJ Parker scored 18, Chris Ford 12 and Ben Struss 11.
