MASON CITY - Second-ranked Mason City whipped Waterloo East, 18-1, in four innings Saturday night in a Class 4A substate first round baseball game.
The game was delayed one day because of rain.
Mason City (32-9) sent 17 men to the plate and scored 11 runs in the top of the first inning. (Full story in Mason City Globe-Gazette)
Mason City is the No. 1 seed in Substate 2. The Mohawks advance to Wednesday's substate final at Mason City. Their opponent will be either Cedar Rapids Prairie or Linn-Mar.
No. 3 seed Linn-Mar (22-17) plays at second-seeded Prairie (25-15) in a substate semifinal Monday at 7 p.m. Both advanced with late-game heroics in Friday's first round. Linn-Mar beat Cedar Falls, 4-3, with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning and Prairie outlasted Waterloo West, 6-4, in eight innings.
Linn-Mar and Prairie played three times during the regular season. Prairie won all three.
