Versatile Ollinger helps Linn-Mar win

PDF

Sometimes Amanda Ollinger is a guard, sometimes she's a forward and sometimes she's a center.

The versatile 6-foot-1 senior did most of her damage in the low post Friday night and helped Linn-Mar top Cedar Rapids Prairie, 53-44, with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Linn-Mar coach Jaime Brandt saw Ollinger had a size advantage near the basket against the Hawks, so she stationed her top player in the low post where she could score or feed teammates for shots.

"That was an adjustment we made on the spot," Ollinger said. "We really didn't know what they were going to throw at us."

"I'm comfortable anywhere on the floor," she said. "Working on finishing at the hoop is a really big thing for me that I'm trying to improve on this season."

Ollinger did a good job with her back to the basket. She's spent of the season on the perimeter, but the situation called for a low-post center and she delivered.

"We figured out that Prairie was doubling a lot, so we were able to get the ball inside and it kind of opened up everything," said Brandt.

Camryn Finley scored 12 points for Linn-Mar (6-1) and Alie Akers added 11.

Ollinger, who has signed with Iowa, and Finley, a sophomore who already has offers from Drake and Northern Iowa, give Linn-Mar a pair of explosive players who are capable of scoring lots of points. So far, however, the Lions have not scored at a rapid rate with four games in the 40s and one in the 50s.

Brandt, a big scorer during her playing days at Linn-Mar and Iowa, would like to see her team produce more offense.

"I hope so," she said. "Some games we shoot the ball really well and some games we're a little off. I think it just varies from game to game.

"We do look to push the ball a lot, which hopefully will lead to some higher numbers than what we're getting right now. Teams are throwing a lot of different defenses at us and we're trying to learn to play through that as well.

"One thing we need to work on is just being tougher," she said. "Tougher with the basketball, tougher mentally."

Finley said she does not have a timetable for making a decision about college. "I don't really have a No. 1 yet," she said. "I'm just talking to coaches and seeing what's out there."

Olivia Usher led Prairie (4-4) with 13 points. Jenna Wagemester scored 11 points and Halle Person had 10.
