GCRO shortened to 36 holes

Chris Thompson of Lawrence, Kan., shot a 5-under par 67 Saturday and is the leader in the clubhouse midway through the second round of the Greater Cedar Rapids Open at Hunters Ridge.

Because of rain-plagued playing conditions, the tournament has been cut to 36 holes for all divisions.

More than half of the players in the open division did not start their second round Saturday. That list includes Brock Mulder of Waterloo, who shot a course-record 61 Friday that was 11-under par. Thompson is at 11-under par.

Play is scheduled to start Sunday morning at 7, barring more weather delays.

Bill Hoefle of Marion, the assistant boys golf coach at Linn-Mar, shot a pair of 69s Saturday and is in the clubhouse at 6-under par, five shots behind Thompson. He is tied for second among players that completed their second round.

A pair of former PGA Tour members tied for the lead in the Senior Division. Dave Rummells from West Branch and Barry Cheesman are at 4-under par, one shot ahead of UNI men's golf coach John Bermel.

The Amateur Division was completed Saturday and Nate Dunn of Hiawatha claimed his second straight title and fourth overall, shooting an even-par 144 for a two-stroke margin over J.D. Schlotterback. Jefferson boys golf coach Steve Koepke and Kirkwood men's golf coach Darin Pint tied for fifth at 8-over par.
