Bohannon climbs to 3rd as Lions roll

PDF

The top three scorers in the long and storied history of Metro boys basketball have all played for Linn-Mar.

Their names are Marcus Paige, Jason Bohannon and Jordan Bohannon.

Jordan Bohannon joined the prestigious list Thursday night when he scored 15 points to help the 10th-ranked Lions defeat Waterloo West, 91-76, in an entertaining Mississippi Valley Conference game at Linn-Mar.

The potent Lions finished the regular season with a seven-game winning streak and will carry a 16-5 record into the Class 4A substate tournament next week.

Paige poured in 1,701 points at Linn-Mar before taking his talents to North Carolina. Jason Bohannon fired in 1,679 points for the Lions before starring at Wisconsin. Now Jordan Bohannon, the youngest of the four Bohannon brothers, has moved into third with 1,529.

Bohannon nudged one point ahead of Mark Enright, who scored 1,528 points at Kennedy (1970-73).

Now there are three Lions, all alone at the top.

"I'm honored to be in the same breath as they are," Bohannon said. "They've helped me out so much."

Chris Robertson has coached all three -- Paige, Bohannon and Bohannon -- during his successful career at Linn-Mar. He noted that Jason Bohannon scored all of his points in three seasons, compared to four seasons apiece for Paige and Jordan Bohannon, and marveled at their accomplishments.

"Obviously three fantastic players," Robertson said.

"They're winners," he said. "They work hard, they know how to play the game. It's not just what they do, it's what they do for others, too.

"They just really understand the game and know how to play it. And obviously all three of them can really shoot it. It's neat to see those three guys up there."

Jordan Bohannon broke his brother's Metro record for career 3-pointers several weeks ago and now has 253, compared to 230 for Jason Bohannon.

Bohannon struggled with his shooting Thursday, hitting 4-for-13 overall and 2-for-8 on his patented 3-pointers, but he collected eight assists, five rebounds and two steals.

Beau Klostermann, playing the best basketball of his career, continued his hot streak with four 3-pointers and 28 points. Jordan Brandt also hit four triples during a flurry in the first half and finished with 18 points.

Jared Printy tossed in another four 3-pointers and netted 14 points. And Riley Murphy contributed two 3-pointers and eight points.

All told, the Lions matched their own school record with sixteen 3-pointers.

"We had a lot of guys step up," Bohannon said. "I wasn't hitting my shots and it was nice to see Beau get his game in. He played really well. There aren't a lot of big guys in the state who can guard him."

Klostermann can score all over the floor, inside and out.

"Coach said to be aggressive and I've been trying to do it the last couple of weeks," he said. "The whole team has been playing really well offensively.

"I'm feeling really good right now, really confident. I've got to give a lot of credit to my teammates. They drive and hit me with an extra pass for a wide-open shot.

"It's a lot of fun," Klostermann said. "We have a lot of talent on the court."

The Lions canned 57.1 percent of their 3-pointers (16 of 28) and sizzled at 60.1 percent overall from the floor (31 of 51).

Robertson started five seniors who usually don't play a lot on Senior Night with Levi Werkman, Andrew Kraus, Austin Angel, Forrest Cronin and Bryce Miller in the opening lineup. They held their own and kept the Lions within 10-8 in the first quarter until Robertson send his normal starting five onto the court with Bohannon, Klostermann, Printy, Brandt and Murphy taking their place.

The Linn-Mar fans and coaches gave the five starters a round of applause. "They did a great job," said Robertson.

Linn-Mar raced to a 16-point margin at 38-22 in the second quarter and appeared headed for an easy victory, but Waterloo West rallied behind some sharp shooting of its own and took a 53-52 edge midway through the third period.

The Lions led 67-63 after three quarters, then blew away to another 16-point lead at 87-71 on a 3-pointer by Murphy.

"We're playing our best basketball right now, which is what you want to do," Robertson said. "Now it's time to pin your ears back and go after it."

Amel Kuljuhovic, a 6-foot-9 senior, scored 23 points for Waterloo West (6-15). Jacory Spates scored 17 points.
