No. 4 Eagles raise record to 39-4

The fourth-ranked Kirkwood Eagles slugged five home runs Wednesday and swept an ICCAC conference doubleheader from Ellsworth, 8-0 and 12-1, at the Kirkwood softball field.

Both games lasted only five innings.

Kirkwood raised its records to 39-4 overall and 17-1 in the conference. The Eagles have won 26 of their last 27 games and lead the ICCAC standings by two games.

Taylor Nearad and Teagan Toft belted home runs in the first game. Toft drove in three runs, Payton Mercer went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Nearad was 2-for-3. Nicky Simpson (19-2, 1.96) pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

Gabi Carter, Nearad and Maddie Hansen hit home runs in the second game. Carter was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs. Nearad, Morgan Frost, Hansen and Lexi Ferrari had two hits. Frost drove in three runs. Nearad and Hansen had two RBIs.

Allie Mengler (2-0, 3.13) pitched a three-hitter with six strikeouts.

Nearad has 19 homers and 82 RBIs this season. Carter has 17 homers and 70 RBIs. Hansen has 10 homers and 58 RBIs.

Ellsworth fell to 4-32 overall and 3-14 in the conference.
