PREP PREVUES - Friday, Sept. 2

Jefferson (0-1) at Washington (1-0)

Site: Kingston Stadium

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Storyline - This is the longest-running rivalry in the Metro area. Washington whipped Jefferson 49-0 last year and has outscored the J-Hawks 94-7 the last two seasons.

Washington Coach Tony Lombardi has never lost to the J-Hawks.

Jefferson - The J-Hawks have lost 14 straight games dating back to a Sept. 25, 2009, win over Dubuque Senior. Jefferson was beaten by Linn-Mar 35-10 last week, but showed an ability to move the ball, gaining 292 yards. The receiving corps received a boost this week when standout point guard Taylor Olson joined the team. He will dress for this game, but likely will not play. Top players: QB Alex Baxter, sr. (11-15-0-128, 1 TD passing; 12-26 rushing); RB Austin Short, sr. (16-89 rushing); C Ryan Eivins, sr.; OL/DL Mic Vesey, sr.; FB/LB Tanner Lund, sr. (3-32 receiving; 8 tackles); TE Austin Goodell, sr. Washington - The Warriors shrugged off the loss of two key players before the start of the season and pounded Prairie 51-26 last Friday night at Prairie. Senior Braedon Tovey passed for 253 yards in his first start and senior Flynn Heald caught nine passes for a school-record 238 yards. The Warriors also rushed for 249 yards. Top players: QB Braedon Tovey, sr. (11-18-1-253, 2 TDs passing; 4-4 rushing); WR Flynn Heald, sr. (9-238, 2TDs receiving); RB Mitch Bredeson, jr. (17-115, 1 TD rushing); RB/DB David Tann, sr. Kennedy (0-1) at No. 8 Linn-Mar (1-0)

Storyline - Linn-Mar hosts the first football game at its new stadium against northeast side neighbor Kennedy. Linn-Mar won a hard-fought 17-11 victory a year ago at Kingston Stadium. Both teams were Class 4A playoff qualifiers a year ago.

Kennedy - The Cougars were throttled on offense for most of last Friday's season opening 28-0 loss to Xavier. When they finally got some offense going they got hurt by two key turnovers deep in Saints territory.  Standout running back Trevor Heitland never got much room to run. TE/LB Cody Witham is out after breaking his collarbone against Xavier.  Top players: RB Trevor Heitland, sr. (10-42 rushing; 1-26 receiving); WR/DB Josh Jahlas, sr. (4-40 receiving; 13 tackles); QB Chico Lizarraga, sr. (13-28-1-99 passing); S Andrew Johnson, jr. (7 tackles); LB Prince Kollie, soph. (15 tackles).

 

Linn-Mar - The Lions ran their record to 18-5 over the past three seasons with a 35-10 win over Jefferson last Thursday. Mark Atwater found a new favorite target, throwing three touchdown passes to Andy Henry. The Lions rolled up 360 total yards. Zach Martins returned a fumble 47 yeards for a touchdown. Top players: QB/LB Mark Atwater, sr. (11-65, 1 TD rushing; 11-19-1-164, 3 TDs passing; 4 tackles); RB/LB Mitch Wantock, sr. (10-70 rushing); LB Tommy Feller, sr. Prairie (0-1) at No. 10 Xavier (1-0)

Storyline - Prairie is looking for its first win for first-year coach Mike Morrissey. Xavier is looking to build momentum after flattening Kennedy last week. The Saints struggled to beat Prairie 17-10 last season at John Wall Field. The Hawks have lost two straight in the series, both at Prairie. They last beat Xavier 14-7 on Oct. 24, 2008, at Xavier.

Prairie - The Hawks opened up their offense but had a lot of trouble on defense in a 51-26 loss to Washington last Friday. Prairie rolled up 378 yards of offense, including 232 on the ground. But the Hawks coughed the ball up four times, then got raked for 502 yards on defense.  Top players: FL Demetrius Harper, jr. (7-123, 1 TD rushing; 3-63 receiving, 1 TD); RB Zach Witte, sr. (11-88 rushing); QB Jace Hanna, sr. (6-18-3-102, 1 TD passing); QB Peyton Wagner, jr. (2-2-0-44 1 TD passing); PK Austin Reutzel, sr. (3-3 PAT, 1-1 FG); TE Drake Brunscheen, sr. (2-50, 1 TD); LB Cam Rathje, jr. (17 tackles); DB Bryce Alberts, sr. (15 tackles).

 

Xavier - The Saints played like a well-oiled machine in routing Kennedy 28-0 last Friday night at Kingston Stadium. They rolled up 434 yards of total offense and held Kennedy to 142. Carter Valentine stepped into the tailback spot and ran for 152 yards in 2 1/2 quarters, leaving with cramps. Reggie Schulte was on the mark, throwing three touchdown passes. Top players: RB Carter Valentine, sr. (22-152 rushing); QB Reggie Schulte, jr. (8-13-1-179, 3 TDs passing); WR Jordan Hoffman, sr. (2-69, 2 TDs); TE/DE Kevin Hosch, sr. (2-18, 1 TD receiving); FB Matt Hansen, sr. (12-53, 1 TD); RB/DB Jordan Weber, sr. (5 tackles); PK Chad Gilmer, sr. (4-4 PAT).

 

Benton (0-1) at Marion (1-0)

Site: Thomas Park

Time: 7:30 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5:15 p.m.

Storyline - These teams compete each other in the Wamac Conference, but are split into different districts for football. Marion is in Class 3A District 5 and Benton in Class 3A District 6. Marion won last year's game 21-7 at Van Horne. The Indians' Colton Storla ran for 252 yards and two touchdowns.

Benton - The Bobcats opened the season with an 18-12 overtime loss to Vinton-Shellsburg. Top players: QB Jake Stenberg, sr. (7-14-1-94, 1 TD passing; 8-29 rushing); RB Brandon Beaver, sr. (19-74 rushing); TE/LB Jake Allen, sr. (10-34, 1 TD rushing; 13 tackles); LB Isaac Hopkins, sr. (16 tackles); WR Kaleb Thomas, sr. (3-54, 1 TD receiving).

 

 

 

Marion - The Indians rallied from a 10-0 deficit to beat Mount Vernon 14-10 in last Friday's season opener at Mount Vernon. Colton Storla ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns. The Indians rushed for 210 yards and held Mount Vernon to 3 yards of rushing offense and 143 total yards. Hunter Banes intercepted a pass and blocked a punt. Top players: RB Colton Storla, sr. (23-113, 2 TDs rushing); QB Cale Cannoy, sr. (5-12-0-56 passing); FB/LB Jake McDonald, sr. (4-8 rushing; 12 tackles, four for loss); RB/LB Trev Biery, jr. (7-44 rushing); RB Tyler Gunderson, jr. (5-33); OL Zach Borens, jr.

 

Cedar Valley Christian (0-1) at Dunkerton (0-2)

Time: 7 p.m.

Storyline - Cedar Valley Christian is looking for its first win ever in this eight-man game.

Cedar Valley Christian - The Huskies opened the season two weeks ago with a 62-8 loss at West Central. They gave up 320 yards rushing to the Blue Devils and were held to minus-40 yards rushing on offense and 59 total yards. CVC did not play last week. This is the second of four games the Huskies will play. Top players: WR/RB/DB Nick Henderson, jr. (2-51, 1 TD receiving; 9-5 rushing); WR/LB David Sperling, jr. (3-33 receiving; 13 tackles); QB Arturo Melendez, jr. (3-8-1-75 1 TD); QB David Strutz, sr. (3-9-2-24 passing).

 

 

 

 

Dunkerton - The Raiders lost to Clarksville 45-24 in their opener two weeks ago and was drubbed by Janesville 45-6 last week. They got off to a slow start last season also, losing thier first five games, but finished the season by winning four of their last five. Top players: RB Jacob Boeschen (36-127, 2 TDs rushing; 6-92, 2 TDs receiving; 15 tackles); QB Dillon Anderson (33-59-3-380, 2 TDs passing); WR Logan Stuver (13-150 receiving); WR Jason Bedard (7-71 receiving; 19 tackles).
