PREP PREVUE - Friday, Sept. 9

Washington (2-0) at Kennedy (0-2)

Storyline - Both teams are off to surprising starts. Washington appeared to be down after the loss of two key players before the start of the season, but the Warriors have outscored their first two foes by a combined 86-32. Much was expected of Kennedy, despite huge graduation losses, but the Cougars have been outscored by a combined 70-14 in losses to No. 10 Xavier and No. 8 Linn-Mar.

Washington - The Warriors rolled up 277 yards rushing in a 35-6 romp past Jefferson last Friday. Kevin Tann ran for 133 yards and two touchdowns. The week before the Warriors ran for 249 yards and passed for 253 in a 51-26 win. Top players: QB Braedon Tovey, sr. (21-33-2-365, 4 TDs passing; 5-15 rushing); WR/CB Flynn Heald, sr. (15-318, 4TDs receiving); RB Mitch Bredeson, jr. (29-172, 1 TD rushing); FB/S David Tann, sr. (20-205, 3 TD rushing; 20 tackles, 6 for loss);  RB Walter Short, jr. Kennedy - The Cougars' offense has been throttled so far this season, rushing for 81 yards in two games and totaling 277 yards. Senior RB Trevor Heitland ran for more than 900 yards last season, but has 87 this year. Sophomore LB Prince Kollie did not play last week at Linn-Mar and will not play tonight because of a shoulder injury. Top players: RB Trevor Heitland, sr. Storyline - Prairie faces its second-ranked foe in as many weeks, looking for its first win under rookie coach Mike Morrissey.

Cedar Falls - The Tigers have won their first two games by a combined score of 90-9. They whipped Waterloo East 41-6 last week and mauled Hempstead 49-3 in the opener. Cedar Falls features highly-touted RB Barkley Hill, who ran for 5 TDs against Hempstead. He is being recruited by Iowa State and UNI among others. WR James Harrington is the state 100 meter champ and a three-year starter. Top players: RB Barkley Hill, sr. (50-420, 9 TDs rushing; 1-26 receiving); QB Ike Boettger, jr. (13-19-1-244, 3 TDs passing; 13 tackles); WR James Harrington, sr. (7-136, 2 TDs receiving); WR Jake Gallu, sr. (4-66, 1 TD).

 

Prairie - The Hawks opened up their offense in their opener against Washington, but were shut down last week in a 14-0 loss at Xavier. Standout junior FL Demetrious Harper broke his collarbone on the opening kickoff against Xavier, taking away a potent Prairie weapon. C/LB Casey Becker is out with a concussion. Top players: RB Zach Witte, sr. (13-102 rushing); QB Jace Hanna, sr. (19-43-3-357, 1 TD passing); QB Peyton Wagner, jr. (2-2-0-35 1 TD passing; 5-18 rushing; 4-69 receiving); PK Austin Reutzel, sr. (3-3 PAT, 1-1 FG); TE Drake Brunscheen, sr. (3-66, 1 TD); LB Cam Rathje, jr. (21 tackles); DB Bryce Alberts, sr. (26 tackles).

 

No. 8 Linn-Mar (2-0) at Wahlert (2-0)

Site: Rock Bowl, Loras College, Dubuque

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Storyline - Both teams were 2-0 a year ago when they met at Linn-Mar and the Lions thumped the Golden Eagles, 34-14. Linn-Mar went on to a 7-3 record and the playoffs. The loss started a seven-game skid for Wahlert and it finished 2-7.

Linn-Mar - The Lions ran their record to 19-5 over the past three seasons with a 42-14 drubbing of Kennedy in the first football game at Linn-Mar Stadium last Friday. The Lions have outscored their first two foes 77-24. Senior QB Mark Atwater has thrown five TD passes and run for two. His favorite target is senior Andy Henry, who has three TD receptions and returned a kickoff for a TD. Top players: QB/LB Mark Atwater, sr. (18-115, 2 TD rushing; 24-38-1-344, 5 TDs passing; 6 tackles); RB/LB Mitch Wantock, sr. (21-158, 1 TD rushing); LB Tommy Feller, sr. (18 tackles, 4 for loss); WR/KR Andy Henry, sr. (8-163, 3 TD receiving); TE Jacob Hutchins, sr. (6-85 receiving); WR/DB Zach Martins, sr. (4-39, 2 TDs receiving; 2 tackles); C Dustin Smith, sr.

 

Wahlert - The Golden Eagles outscored Waterloo West 48-34 in their opener, then held off Dubuque Senior 20-15 last week. Senior rallied from a 20-0 deficit and had the ball deep in Wahlert territory when time ran out. Senior QB Riley McCarron is an outstanding all-around athlete. He rushed rushed for 179 yards and passed for 224 in Wahlert's win over Waterloo West. He played running back the previous two seasons. Top players (no stats available): QB Riley McCarron, sr.; RB Sam Koenig, sr.; WR Brady Williams, sr.; LB Sawyer Theisen, sr.

No. 10 Xavier (2-0) at Hempstead (0-2)

Site: Dalzell Field, Dubuque

Storyline - Xavier has not allowed a point in its first two games and is playing a Hempstead club that has scored only 20 total points in losses to No. 1 Cedar Falls and No. 9 Iowa City West.

Xavier - The Saints played like a well-oiled machine for a second straight week in beating Prairie 14-0 last Friday night at Saints Field. Senior RB Carter Valentine leads the Metro in rushing with 312 yards and junior QB Reggie Schulte has completed just over 65 percent of his passes. The Saints defense has allowed only 83 yards rushing in two games. Top players: RB Carter Valentine, sr. (39-312, 2 TDs rushing); QB Reggie Schulte, jr. (23-35-1-262, 3 TDs passing); WR Jordan Hoffman, sr. (3-73, 2 TDs); WR Corbin Woods, jr. (7-72 receiving); TE/DE Kevin Hosch, sr. (4-41, 1 TD receiving; 3 tackles, 2 for loss); FB Matt Hansen, sr. Hempstead - The Mustangs were held to 125 total yards in a 49-3 loss to Cedar Falls, and 252 in a 42-17 loss to Iowa City West. Senior Luke Ploessl completed 8-of-10 passes for 89 yards against West. Top players: QB Luke Ploessl, sr. (15-26-2-149 passing; 11-22, 1 TD rushing); RB/DB Layton Fritsch, sr. (17-77, 1 TD rushing; 12 tackles); WR Alex Smith, sr. (4-45 receiving); WR Travis Boleyn, jr. (4-35 receiving); LB Mike Edwards, sr. (17 tackles); LB Brett Haas, sr. (15 tackles).

 

 

Marion (2-0) at Western Dubuque (1-1)

Site: Western Dubuque High School, Epworth, Iowa

Time: 7:30 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5:15 p.m.

Storyline - This is the Class 3A District 5 opener for both schools.

Marion - The Indians ran up a 28-0 lead and beat Benton Community, 28-14, last Friday night at Thomas Park. The health of senior RB Colton Storla (hand) is a concern. He ran for 113 yards in the Indians' 14-10 win over Mount Vernon in the season opener, but played less than a full quarter against Benton. He ran for more than 1,200 yards a year ago and is a three-year starter. Top players: RB Colton Storla, sr. (28-136, 3 TDs rushing); QB Cale Cannoy, sr. (9-21-0-83 passing); FB/LB Jake McDonald, sr. (8-13 rushing; 12 tackles, four for loss); RB/LB Trev Biery, jr. (14-82 rushing); RB Tyler Gunderson, jr. (15-70, 2 TDs rushing); OL Zach Borens, jr.

 

Western Dubuque - The Bobcats stunned West Delaware 17-16 last Friday at Epworth, despite being held to 41 yards rushing and 178 total yards. They were whipped by Class 2A No. 3 Dyersville Beckman, 34-7, in their opener, managing only 185 total yards. Top players: QB Nick Tuttle, sr. (12-34-0-226, 1 TD passing; 10-(-42) rushing); RB Cody Reimer, jr. (15-86, 1 TD rushing); FB Tyson Massey, sr. (19-35, 1 TD rushing); WR Logan Pitz, sr. (6-158, 1 TD receiving).

Cedar Valley Christian (0-2) at Midland (3-0)

Site: Midland High School, Wyoming, Iowa

Time: 7 p.m.

Storyline - Cedar Valley Christian is looking for its first win ever in this eight-man game.

Cedar Valley Christian - The Huskies opened the season three weeks ago with a 62-8 loss at West Central, then fell last week at Dunkerton 66-28. This is the third of four games the Huskies will play. They close out their season Sept. 23 at Central City. Top players: WR/RB/DB Nick Henderson, jr. (3-121, 2 TDs receiving; 36-73, 1 TD rushing); WR/LB David Sperling, jr. (13-186, 1 TD receiving; 21 tackles); QB Arturo Melendez, jr. (3-8-1-75 1 TD); QB Jeremy Strutz, sr. (14-32-3-247, 2 TDs passing; 18-6, 1 TD rushing).

 

 

 

 

Midland - The Eagles are averaging 52 points and have rushed for more than 1,000 yards in their first three games after drubbing Tr-County, Springville and Meskwaki Settlement School. Junior RB Ryan Leonard has rushed for 630 yards and nine TDs. This is Midland's second year in 8-man football. It previously played 11-man football. Top players: RB Ryan Leonard, jr. (70-631, 9 TDs rushing; 8-131, 5 TDs receiving); QB Hagan Ackley, so. (10-31-1-182, 6 TDs passing); RB/LB Levi Kozlowski, jr. (27-201, 2 TDs rushing; 27 tackles); RB Cody Kanke, jr.
