No. 2 Iowa City High (3-0) at No. 7 Xavier (3-0)

Storyline - This is the premier game in the state. These teams played a classic battle last year in Iowa City that wasn't decided until Little Hawks' freshman kicker Drew Cornwell, who had earlier missed two PAT kicks, booted a 28-yard, game-winning field goal with 1.8 seconds left that lifted City High to a 26-24 win. This also is the classic irresistible force versus immovable object. City High is averaging 409 yards rushing, Xevier is allowing 58.7.

Iowa City High - The Little Hawks have rolled to three straight wins by an average score of 40 to 12. City High steamrolled Iowa City West 42-24 last Friday behind Ronald Thompson's 362 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Quarterback Jasper Washington also ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns. The Little Hawks attempted only one pass. City High has run for 1,228 yards and passed for 131. Top players: RB Ronald Thompson, sr. (68-623, 8 TDs rushing); QB/DB Jasper Washington, sr. Xavier - The Saints moved up three spots in the AP poll after shutting out their third straight foe to start the season, blanking Dubuque Hempstead, 34-0, last Friday at Dubuque. Xavier's defense has been tough against the rush, limiting foes to 58.7 yards per game. On offense, senior Carter Valentine has three 100-yard games and leads the Metro in rushing with 440 yards. Junior QB Reggie Schulte has completed 70 percent of his 50 passes. Top players: RB Carter Valentine, sr. (59-440, 5 TDs rushing); QB Reggie Schulte, jr. Storyline - Both of these teams are looking to get back on the winning track after losses last week. This is a key game for the Warriors and their playoff hopes. They still have games remaining against Iowa City High, Linn-Mar and Iowa City West. The Warriors won last year's game, 40-16, when since graduated Alex Carr ran for 175 yards and five touchdowns.

Wahlert - The Golden Eagles held a 16-14 halftime lead over Linn-Mar last Friday, then got trampled 54-22. Linn-Mar ran for 514 yards and amassed 656 yards of total offense. QB Riley McCarron is an outstanding all-around athlete. He passed for 277 yards and ran for 45 against Linn-Mar.  Sam Koenig ran for 112 yards against the Lions. Top players: QB/DB Riley McCarron, sr. (31-51-2-678, 6 TDs passing; 30-289, 3 TDs rushing; 14 tackles, 2 int.); RB/PK Sam Koenig, sr. Washington - The Warriors were rolled over by Kennedy last Friday, 41-28, when the Cougars ran for 314 yards. Washington spent most of the night down by three scores and went to its passing attack. Flynn Heald set conference and school records with 21 catches for 290 yards. He leads the state in receptions per game, averaging 12. The week before the Warriors rolled up 277 yards rushing in a 35-6 romp past Jefferson. The week before that the Warriors ran for 249 yards and passed for 253 in a 51-26 win at Prairie. Waterloo West (0-3) at No. 6 Linn-Mar (3-0)

Storyline - Linn-Mar will be out to maintain the momentum it has gained in winning its first three games by an average score of 44-15. The Lions whipped West 45-0 last year when Jer Garman ran for 313 yards and five touchdowns.

Waterloo West - The Wahawks lost a heartbreaker, 24-21, in overtime to Dubuque Senior last Friday, despite 154 yards rushing by Dequayvious Martin. They also lost a shootout to Wahlert in Week One, 48-34. They were drubbed by City High 52-13 two weeks ago. Top players: RB Dequayvious Martin, jr. (69-382, 4 TDs rushing; 7-191, 1 TD receiving); QB Shane Bowers, sr. (20-38-1-347, 2 TDs passing; 40-199, 2 TDs rushing); QB Brandon Tovar, jr. (7-11-1-94, 1 TD passing); WR Alex Brown, sr. Linn-Mar - The Lions ran their record to 20-5 over the past three seasons with a 54-22 pounding of Wahlert last Friday at Dubuque. Linn-Mar set school records with 514 yards rushing and 656 total yards. The Lions have outscored their first three foes 131-46. Senior QB Mark Atwater has thrown eight TD passes and run for four. His favorite target is senior Andy Henry, who has five TD receptions and returned a kickoff for a TD. Top players: QB/LB Mark Atwater, sr. Jefferson (0-3) at No. 1 Cedar Falls (3-0)

Storyline - A Jefferson defense that has not been able to slow opponents' rushing attacks in the first three games faces one of the top running backs in the state in Cedar Falls senior Barkley Hill.

Jefferson - The J-Hawks have lost 16 straight games dating back to a Sept. 25, 2009, win over Dubuque Senior. Jefferson was beaten by Waterloo East 33-10 last week and has been outscored 103-26 in its first three games. The J-Hawks have allowed 765 yards rushing, an average 255 per game. Top players: QB Alex Baxter, sr. (33-62-1-300, 1 TD passing; 43-203 rushing); RB Austin Short, sr. (26-89 rushing); RB Kyle Mann, sr. Cedar Falls - The Tigers have won their first three games by a combined score of 131-37. They held off Prairie 41-28 last Friday, when Barkley Hill ran for 293 yards and five touchdowns. Hill has committed to Iowa State. WR James Harrington is the state 100 meter champ and a three-year starter, who has received scholarship offers from at least 11 schools, including UNI, Army, Kansas State, Nevada and Ohio. He is being recruited by Iowa and Iowa State. Top players: RB Barkley Hill, sr. (82-698, 14 TDs rushing; 1-26 receiving); QB Ike Boettger, jr. (22-29-1-321, 4 TDs passing); WR James Harrington, sr. Prairie (0-3) at Iowa City West (2-1)

Storyline - Prairie is looking for its first win under rookie coach Mike Morrissey against a West squad smarting after a loss to Iowa City High knocked it out of the top 10.

Prairie - The Hawks passed for 361 yards last week, but their upset bid against No. 1 Cedar Falls came up short, 41-28. Prairie found another receiver in Jarred Edmonds who caught nine passes for 178 yards stepping in for the injured Demetrious Harper, who is out with a broken collarbone. The Hawks' defense gave up 333 yards rushing to Cedar Falls. Top players: RB Zach Witte, sr. (22-128 rushing); QB Jace Hanna, sr. (45-82-4-718, 3 TDs passing; 30-23 rushing); QB Peyton Wagner, jr. (2-3-0-35 1 TD passing; 9-30, 2 TDs rushing; 7-92 receiving); WR/LB Jarred Edmonds, jr. (9-178, 2 TDs receiving; 1-46 rushing; 29 tackles); PK Austin Reutzel, sr. Iowa City West - The Trojans were manhandled by Iowa City High 42-24 last Friday when Ronald Thompson ran for 362 yards. QB Charles Rogers had 269 yards of total offense against the Little Hawks, including 96 yards rushing. Junior wide receiver Dondre Alexander is a big-time player who has generated interest from Iowa, Iowa State and Michigan State, accoring to rivals.com. Top players: QB Charles Rogers, sr. Kennedy (1-2) at Dubuque Senior (1-2)

Storyline - Both teams are looking to build off of wins last week. Kennedy ripped the Rams 46-0 a year ago at Kingston Stadium.

Kennedy - The Cougars' offense broke out against Washington in a 41-28 win last Friday. Alex Hillyer took over as tailback and ran 36 times for 208 yards and senior Trvor Heitland moved to flanker and caught six passes for 100 yards. Both scored three touchdowns. The Cougars need to be wary of looking ahead to next week's game against Iowa City High. Top players: RB Trevor Heitland, sr. (41-157, 3 TDs rushing; 7-126, 1 TD receiving); WR/DB Josh Jahlas, sr. Dubuque Senior - The Rams snapped a 13-game losing streak when they beat Waterloo West, 24-21, in overtime last Friday. They nearly halted their streak a week earlier, rallying from a 20-0 deficit before falling 20-15 to Wahlert. RB Zayne Moore ran for 148 yards against West and QB Robby Jones completed 18 of 26 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown. Jones also scored on two short TD runs. Top players: RB Zayne Moore, sr. (57-324 rushing; 5-39 receiving); QB Robby Jones, sr. (40-65-2-392, 3 TDs passing; 31-46, 2 TDs rushing; 13 tackles); WR Keegan Gallery, jr. (13-147, 1 TD receiving); WR Jon Powers, sr. Anamosa (2-1, 0-1) at Marion (2-1, 0-1)

Storyline - Both teams are in search of a district win after stumbling last week. Marion blasted Anamosa 44-0 a year ago at Anamosa.

Anamosa- The Raiders started out the season with a pair of wins, including a 21-18 stunner against Monticello in the opener that snapped a 19-game losing skid. Anamosa was held to 34 yards rushing, but passed for 192, in a 42-14 loss to DeWitt Central last Friday. Top players: QB Nik Schulte, sr. (27-56-1-612, 5 TDs passing; 22-5 rushing); RB/DB Alex Breon, sr. (14-130, 2 TDs rushing; 28 tackles); WR Josh Schulte, jr. (13-341, 3 TDs receiving); FL Aaron Krapfl, sr. (9-159, 1 TD receiving); LB Tyler DeRosia, sr. (40 tackles).

 

Marion - The Indians were stunned by Western Dubuque 7-0 last Friday night at Epworth. The Indians were held to 26 yards passing and 147 total yards. The health of senior RB Colton Storla (hand) is a concern. He ran for 113 yards in the Indians' 14-10 win over Mount Vernon in the season opener, but played less than a full quarter against Benton and had only 58 yards against Western Dubuque. He ran for more than 1,200 yards a year ago and is a three-year starter. Top players: RB Colton Storla, sr. (44-194, 3 TDs rushing); QB Cale Cannoy, sr.
