Mustangs spiked by Vikings for title

PDF

DES MOINES - The eighth-ranked Mount Mercy men's volleyball team lost to fourth-ranked Grand View, 3-0, in the championship match of the Heart of America Conference tournament Saturday in Des Moines.

Grand View won 25-23, 25-15, 25-20 and earned the league's automatic bid to the inaugural NAIA national tournament that will be played at Grand View from April 16-20.

Mount Mercy (22-8) could possibly receive an at-large bid to the national tournament, but it appears to be a longshot.

Mount Mercy upset Grand View when the Vikings were ranked No. 1 earlier in the season, but Grand View won the rematch at Mount Mercy and dominated the third meeting in the conference finals.

Grand View (18-1) has lost only one match all season.

Felix Chapman collected 20 kills for Grand View Saturday to dominate the conference finals. Evan Gaskill led Mount Mercy with 10 kills. Nikola Stoimenov and Julian Armendano had nine kills. Andrew Colantone had 32 assists.
