No. 1 Cedar Falls (4-0) at Xavier (3-1)

Storyline - Which Xavier defense shows up? The one that did not allow its first three opponents to score? Or the one that was lit up for 52 points last week in a loss to No. 2 Iowa City High? Like City High, Cedar Falls features a strong running game. The Tigers beat the Saints 35-0 last season at Cedar Falls.

Cedar Falls - The Tigers have won their first four games by a combined score of 173-43. They waxed Jefferson 42-6 last Friday night at Cedar Falls. Barkley Hill ran for 219 yards and five touchdowns, giving him 10 touchdowns the past two weeks. Hill, who leads Class 4A in rushing with 916 yards, has committed to Iowa State. WR James Harrington is the state 100 meter champ and a three-year starter, who has received scholarship offers from at least 11 schools, including UNI, Army, Kansas State, Nevada and Ohio. He is being recruited by Iowa and Iowa State. Top players: RB Barkley Hill, sr. (94-916, 19 TDs rushing); QB Ike Boettger, jr. (28-37-1-362, 4 TDs passing); WR James Harrington, sr. Xavier - The Saints were manhandled by Iowa City High last Friday night in a 52-24 loss. Xavier's defense held its first three foes to 58.7 yards rushing per game, but was mashed by City High's 400 yards rushing and five touchdowns. On offense, senior Carter Valentine has three 100-yard games and leads the Metro in rushing with 472 yards. Junior QB Reggie Schulte has completed 66.7 percent of his 81 passes. No. 6 Linn-Mar (4-0) at Prairie (0-4)

Storyline - Linn-Mar has been unstoppable in winning its first four games, setting school records for rushing and total offense two weeks ago against Wahlert. Prairie is back at home where it gave No. 1 Cedar Falls a stiff test two weeks ago. The Hawks took a step (or two) backward against Iowa City West in a 50-8 loss last week. Linn-Mar won last season, 41-0, at Linn-Mar.

Linn-Mar - The Lions ran their record to 21-5 over the past three seasons with a 40-0 pounding of Waterloo West last Friday. The previous week Linn-Mar set school records with 514 yards rushing and 656 total yards against Wahlert. The Lions have outscored their first three foes 171-46. Senior QB Mark Atwater has thrown 10 TD passes and run for four. His favorite target is senior Andy Henry, who has six TD receptions and returned a kickoff for a TD. Prairie - After passing for 361 yards the previous week against Cedar Falls, the Hawks were held to 40 total yards in a 50-8 loss to Iowa City West last Friday. The Hawks' defense gave up 333 yards rushing to Cedar Falls and 347 total yards to West. Top players: RB Zach Witte, sr. (31-138 rushing); QB Jace Hanna, sr. Iowa City West (3-1) at Jefferson (0-4)

Storyline - It's Homecoming for a Jefferson team out to end a 17-game losing streak. The J-Hawks have key injuries at running back, where seniors Austin Short (hamstring) and Kyle Mann (ankle) both are doubtful. West beat the J-Hawks 45-16 last season at Iowa City.

Iowa City West - The Trojans bounced back from a 42-24 loss to City High two weeks ago and routed Prairie, 50-8, last Friday. The Trojans have a dangerous playmaker at quarterback in senior Charles Rogers, a three-year starter, who ran for two TDs and passed for two more against Prairie. Junior wide receiver Dondre Alexander is a big-time player who has generated interest from Iowa, Iowa State and Michigan State, accoring to rivals.com. Top players: QB Charles Rogers, sr. (43-73-1-617, 6 TDs passing; 56-349, 7 TDs rushing); WR/CB Dondre Alexander, jr. (21-291, 2TDs receiving); WR Mondo Williams, jr. (9-177, 2 TDs receiving); WR Jeremy Morgan, jr. Jefferson - The J-Hawks have lost 17 straight games dating back to a Sept. 25, 2009, win over Dubuque Senior. Jefferson was beaten by Cedar Falls 42-6 last week and has been outscored 145-32 in its first four games. The J-Hawks have allowed 1,049 yards rushing, an average 262 per game. The J-Hawks may move QB Alex Baxter to RB to shore up the shortage caused by injuries. Senior Jordan Dee or sophomore Layne Sullivan would start at QB. Top players: QB Alex Baxter, sr. Washington (2-2) at Dubuque Senior (1-3)

Storyline - After back-to-back disappointing performances in losses to Kennedy and Wahlert, Washington will be looking to get well against Senior. The Rams looked improved over the first three games, but were dismantled by Kennedy 33-7  last week. Washington beat Senior 62-7 last season at Kingston Stadium.

Washington - The Warriors were stunned by Wahlert 31-10 last Friday when the defense was unable to corral Golden Eagles QB Riley McCarron (260 yards passing, 4 TDs) and the offense committed four turnovers. The week before Kennedy ran for 314 yards against the Warriors. Washington wide receiver Flynn Heald set school and conference records with 21 receptions against Kennedy. He was one catch shy of tying the state record. QB Braedon Tovey threw four interceptions against Wahlert. Top players: QB Braedon Tovey, sr. (52-100-9-779, 5 TDs passing; 20-77, 1 TD rushing); WR/CB Flynn Heald, sr. (40-648, 4TDs receiving); RB Mitch Bredeson, jr. (55-262, 1 TD rushing); FB/S David Tann, sr. Dubuque Senior - The Rams snapped a 13-game losing streak when they beat Waterloo West, 24-21, in overtime two weeks ago. They nearly halted their streak a week earlier, rallying from a 20-0 deficit before falling 20-15 to Wahlert. They fell apart against Kennedy last week, gathering only 226 yards of total offense while the Cougars ran for 344. Top players: RB Zayne Moore, sr. (73-352 rushing; 6-39 receiving); QB Robby Jones, sr. (48-87-2-475, 3 TDs passing; 42-134, 3 TDs rushing; 13 tackles); RB Alex Duster, jr. (17-74 rushing); WR Keegan Gallery, jr. (16-184, 1 TD receiving); WR Jon Powers, sr. (8-106, 1 TD receiving); LB Streat Hoerner, jr. (58 tackles).

 

Vinton-Shellsburg (2-2, 0-2) at Marion (3-1, 1-1)

Time: 7:30 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5:15 p.m.

Storyline - After stumbling in its district opener two weeks ago at Western Dubuque, Marion bounced back with a 58-35 thrashing of Anamosa last Friday. Colton Storla celebrated his 18th birthday with seven touchdowns. It's not his birthday today. The Indians beat Vinton-Shellsburg 35-7 last week.

Vinton-Shellsburg - The Vikings started out the season with a pair of non-district wins against Benton (18-12) and South Tama (35-21) before running into a buzzsaw in their district opener at Maquoketa (58-6) two weeks ago. They were outscored by Western Dubuque, 41-28, last Friday. The Vikings are averaging 265 yards rushing per game, but only 54 yards passing. Gunner Tranel ran for 165 yards and three TDs last week against Western Dubuque and also had 18 tackles. Top players: QB Lincoln Riffey, sr. (12-27-1-208, 1 TD passing; 22-5 rushing); RB/LB Gunner Tranel, sr. (65-324, 5 TDs rushing; 60 tackles, 7 for loss); RB Nolan Edwards, sr. (58-370, 5 TDs rushing); RB Chris Merchant, jr. (30-152 rushing); RB Kelyn Rickels, jr. (20-99, 2 TDs rushing; 4-90, 1 TD receiving); WR Darrin Charlier, sr. (4-93 receiving); LB Matt Walston, sr. (35 tackles).

Marion - The Indians bounced back from their first loss by pounding Anamosa 58-35 last Friday behind Colton Storla's seven touchdowns and 265 yards rushing. They were stunned the week before by Western Dubuque, 7-0. Marion is averaging 266 yards rushing, but only 29 yards passing per game. Storla is still nursing a hand injury. He ran for more than 1,200 yards a year ago and is a three-year starter. Top players: RB Colton Storla, sr. (67-459, 10 TDs rushing); QB Cale Cannoy, sr. (13-34-1-119 passing); FB/LB Jake McDonald, sr. (18-132 rushing; 53 tackles, 13 for loss); RB/LB Trev Biery, jr. (29-193 rushing; 20 tackles); RB Tyler Gunderson, jr. Cedar Valley Christian (0-3) at Central City (0-5)

Site: Central City

Time: 7 p.m.

Storyline - Cedar Valley Christian is looking for its first victory in its final game of the 2011 season. The Huskies are playing their first season of football and have a four-game schedule. The teams have played one common foe. Cedar Valley Christian was beaten by Dunkerton 66-28 on Sept. 2. Central City was beaten by Dunkerton 47-2 last Friday.

Cedar Valley Christian - The Huskies had last week off after a 66-20 loss at Midland two weeks ago. They opened the season with a 62-8 loss at West Central, then fell to Dunkerton. Senior quarterback Jeremy Strutz threw two TD passes and ran for another against Midland. Top receiver and tackler David Sperling (ankle) was hurt against Midland and his status is unknown for tonight's game. Top players: WR/RB/DB Nick Henderson, jr. (9-174, 4 TDs receiving; 48-127, 1 TD rushing); WR/LB David Sperling, jr. (18-226, 1 TD receiving; 28 tackles); QB Jeremy Strutz, sr. (28-62-5-393, 4 TDs passing; 28-65, 2 TDs rushing); LB Zion Brooks, so. (15 tackles, 2 for loss).

 

 

Central City - The Wildcats have been outscored by an average 49-7 score. The most points they have scored in a game is 14, the fewest they have allowed is 30. They are averaging 50 yards rushing and 74 yards passing per game.  Top players: RB/LB Alden Betzer, sr. (58-273, 1 TD rushing; 9-53 receiving; 43 tackles); QB/DB David Mosher, so.
