Jake Faur pitched a one-hitter for five innings Sunday as Mount Mercy defeated Missouri Valley, 14-5, in the second game of a Heart of America Conference doubleheader at the Plaster Athletic Complex.
The Mustangs won the opener, 8-6, to sweep the doubleheader, raising their records to 8-8 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
Faur struck out seven batters and walked only one during his five shutout innings. Missouri Valley scored four runs in the top of the sixth against a relief pitcher, but the Mustangs had an 11-0 lead by then thanks to a 10-run uprising in the third inning.
Nick Sueppel went 3-for-3 with four RBIs in the 14-5 verdict in the nightcap. Cael Lambe was 3-for-3 with two doubles and scored three runs. Michael Barbato was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs for the Mustangs. Spencer Wiskus and Chase Costa had two RBIs.
Collin Shrader was 2-for-3 with two doubles and scored twice in the 8-6 victory in the opener. Lyle Fini was 2-for-2. Joshua Neyens scored three times. Chili Moseley scored twice.
Mount Mercy built an 8-1 lead and held on for the victory after Missouri Valley scored five runs in the sixth.
Blake Willenborg pitched 5.2 innings for the verdict, allowing just one earned run. Nathan Barnes got the final four outs for a save.
Missouri Valley fell to 9-11 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
