PREP PREVUES - Fri., Sept. 30

Kennedy (2-2, 2-3) at Jefferson (0-3, 0-5)

Site: Kingston Stadium

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Radio: KGYM (AM-1600)

Storyline - The question in this game: Can Jefferson stop Kennedy's Stack-I offense that has produced 300-plus yards in two of the Cougars' last three games? Another: Can the J-Hawks' offense generate sustained drives that keep the ball away from Kennedy? The battle at the line of scrimmage seems to favor the Cougars.

Kennedy - The Cougars' Stack-I offense was befuddled by Iowa City High last week after unleashing a devastating running game the previous two weeks, when they rushed for 663 yards in wins over Washington and Dubuque Senior. The No. 2 Little Hawks held Kennedy to 224 total yards, with 135 coming on a pair of touchdown pass plays from Chico Lizarraga to Josh Jahlas. Soph Alex Hillyer has taken over as tailback and has run for 390 yards the last three games after netting 11 in the first two. Senior Trevor Heitland broke a finger against City High but will play. Top players: RB Trevor Heitland, sr. (62-336, 6 TDs rushing; 14-209, 1 TD receiving); WR/DB Josh Jahlas, sr. (6-62, 1 TD rushing; 11-282, 3 TDs receiving; 62 tackles); RB Alex Hillyer, jr. (91-401, 4 TDs rushing; 8-71 receiving); QB Chico Lizarraga, sr. (43-85-2-631, 4 TDs passing); S Andrew Johnson, jr. (37 tackles); LB Prince Kollie, soph. (23 tackles); DE Logan LeTellier, sr. (43 tackles); LB David Hynek, jr. (45 tackles).

Jefferson - The J-Hawks own the state's longest losing streak in Class 4A with 18 straight losses dating back to a Sept. 25, 2009, win over Dubuque Senior. Jefferson was pounded by Iowa City West 63-14 last week and has been outscored 208-46 in its five games. The J-Hawks have allowed 1,335 yards rushing, an average 267 per game. The J-Hawks have moved QB Alex Baxter to RB to shore up the shortage caused by injuries, although senior Austin Short returned last week and ran for 90 yards. Sophomore Layne Sullivan is the starter at QB. Top players: QB/RB/S Alex Baxter, sr. (39-75-1-366, 1 TD passing; 60-240 rushing; 2-33 receiving); RB Austin Short, sr. (42-179 rushing); RB Kyle Mann, sr. (30-176, 2 TDs rushing); C Ryan Eivins, sr.; WR/CB Christian Knox, sr. (18-201, 1 TD receiving); FB/LB Tanner Lund, sr. Linn-Mar is averaging just over 434 yards per game. Senior has limited only one foe to less than 400 yards. It's Linn-Mar's homecoming.

Dubuque Senior - The Rams snapped a 13-game losing streak when they beat Waterloo West, 24-21, in overtime three weeks ago. But since that win they have been beaten by Kennedy and Washington by a combined score of 68-17 during which they were outgained 949 to 447. Top players: RB Zayne Moore, sr. (91-431 rushing; 6-39 receiving); QB Robby Jones, sr. (60-110-3-584, 4 TDs passing; 49-175, 3 TDs rushing); RB Alex Duster, jr. (18-71 rushing); WR Keegan Gallery, jr. Site: Bates Field, Iowa City

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Storyline - Washington rediscovered its rushing game a week ago with 319 yards against Dubuque Senior. But can the Warriors run the ball against a City High outfit that limited Xavier and Kennedy to 42 and 51 yards rushing, respectively, the past two games? Will Griffin has been cleared to play and Coach Tony Lombardi said he would like to get him in for a few snaps. Also, can the Warriors, who gave up 314 rushing yards to Kennedy in Week 3, stop City High tailback Ronald Thompson, who is the state's No. 2 rusher in Class 4A with 1,068 yards?

Washington - The Warriors ran over Dubuque Senior last week, 35-10, to get back into the win column after consecutive losses to Wahlert and Kennedy.
