Emil's ties Bosch for IWSL lead

WALKER - The Iowa Women's Softball League reached the halfway point of the 2020 season Sunday with a torrid race for the title.

Emil's Hideaway swept its doubleheader from Bosch Financial, leaving both teams tied for first place with 4-3-1 records for the 16-game campaign.

Ironside Apparel swept its twinbill from the Metro Sports Report, leaving Ironside Apparel with a 4-4 record and just a half-game behind the leaders. Metro Sports Report is still in the hunt with a 3-5 mark.

Erica Oler of UNI tossed a four-hit shutout in the first game of their doubleheader Sunday in a classic pitchers duel against Jessica Walljasper of Grand View.

Oler scattered the four hits in four different innings and retired 11 of the last 12 batters she faced. She collected only one strikeout, but was supported by strong defense from her Ironside teammates.

Walljasper, making her debut in the IWSL, pitched a complete game and allowed only two hits with seven strikeouts. Ironside Apparel scored in the third inning when Sophie Wilt of Luther reached first base on an infield single and Abigayle Miller of Southeastern Community College belted a long triple.

Skyler Stookey of Coe went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and two RBIs to help power Ironside Apparel in the second game of their doubleheader.

DoniRae Mayhew of Iowa, making her first appearance of the season, had two hits and an RBI for Ironside. Payton Akers of Kirkwood was the winning pitcher.

Kaylee Watson of Grand View went 3-for-3 with an RBI for Metro Sports Report. Liz VanManen of Jacksonville State was 2-for-3.

EMIL'S HIDEAWAY 8, BOSCH FINANCIAL 1

Abby Carlin of Western Illinois continued her strong pitching as Emil's Hideaway topped Bosch Financial, 8-1, in the first game of their doubleheader. Carlin scattered six hits and collected four strikeouts.

Avery Guy of Iowa socked a three-run double for Emil's. Kyra Stoll of Luther had two hits and scored twice.

EMIL'S HIDEAWAY 4, BOSCH FINANCIAL 3

Emil's Hideaway scored all four of its runs in the second inning on consecutive base hits by Ari Rolle (Virginia Wesleyan), Morgan Lewis (Eastern Illinois), Kaylie Reynolds (DMACC) and Brie Tauber (Clarke), followed by a sacrifice fly by Kate Claypool (Iowa).

Reynolds hit an RBI double in the frame and Tauber had a two-run single. Rolle finished with two hits.

Sophie Maras of DMACC had two hits and scored two runs for Bosch Financial. Sydney Illg of Wartburg also had two hits.

Jenna Schwartzhoff of Clarke was the winner pitcher in a good battle against Sarah Lehman of Iowa.
