IWSL enjoys special holiday twinbill

WALKER - The Iowa Women's Softball League enjoyed a special holiday doubleheader in Walker Sunday.

Many of the players in the IWSL took a break in their season to enjoy the Fourth of July weekend with family of friends, so the remaining players joined forces and formed two strong teams for a single doubleheader.

The available players from the Bosch Financial and Ironside Apparel clubs formed one team, and the available players from the Metro Sports Report and Emil's Hideaway ballclubs formed another stout outfit.

The players meshed nicely with their new teammates and played two excellent games, splitting the doubleheader on an extremely warm Sunday in July.

BOSCH/IRONSIDE 6, MSR/EMIL'S 2

Nicole Timmons from Drake and Ellie Thurow from Coe continued their strong pitching Sunday to help Bosch/Ironside win the opener, 6-2.

Timmons struck out eight batters in four innings and allowed only one run. Thurow also allowed just one run in four innings to finish the victory.

Haley McFarlane of St. Cloud State went 2-for-3 for Bosch/Ironside with two doubles and scored two runs. Ceara Larson of Lawrence University went 2-for-2 with three RBIs.

Morgan Lewis of Eastern Illinois was 2-for-2 and scored twice for MSR/Emil's.

MSR/EMIL'S 4, BOSCH/IRONSIDE 2

Jenna Schwartzhoff from Clarke and Jessica Walljasper from Grand View both pitched four strong innings for MSR/Emil's in the second game.

Schwartzhoff pitched the first four innings and allowed only one run. Walljasper tossed the next four frames and also allowed just one run with four strikeouts.

Sammy Moss of UNI went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored for MSR/Emil's. Brie Tauber of Clarke was 2-for-2 and scored a run. Walljasper socked an RBI double. Kaylee Watson of Grand View and  Sydney Robertson of Mount Mercy contributed RBI singles.

Liv Erickson of Simpson was 2-for-3 with a triple for Bosch/Ironside. Sophie Wilt of Luther, Ann Smolenski of Winona State and Skyler Stookey of Coe had two hits.
