PREP PREVUES - Fri., Oct. 7

No. 3 Linn-Mar (4-0, 6-0) at Washington (2-2, 4-2)

Site: Kingston Stadium

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Radio: KGYM (AM-1600)

Storyline - Can Washington's Warriors slay their second straight giant in as many weeks? Washington upset then-No. 2 Iowa City High with a last-second touchdown a week ago. The Warriors' defensive scheme held City High to a season-low 302 yards and the offense kept the ball away from Little Hawks' running back Ronald Thompson. Can the Warriors produce a repeat performance against a Linn-Mar offense averaging 43 points and 445 yards per game? And can Washington's offense keep the ball away from Linn-Mar senior quarterback Mark Atwater, a double threat running and passing the ball? The Lions won last year's game at Linn-Mar, 42-35.

Linn-Mar - The Lions ran their record to 23-5 over the past three seasons with a 41-7 drubbing of Dubuque Senior last Friday. Linn-Mar set school records with 514 yards rushing and 656 total yards against Wahlert on Sept. 9. The Lions have outscored their first six foes 256-67 and have outgained foes by more than 200 yards per game (445.3 to 226.7). Senior QB Mark Atwater has completed 67 percent of his passes, thrown for 16 TDs and run for five TDs. His favorite target is senior Andy Henry, who has 10 TD receptions and returned a kickoff for a TD. Top players: QB/LB Mark Atwater, sr. (49-416, 5 TDs rushing; 67-100-2-1095, 16 TDs passing; 11 tackles); RB/LB Mitch Wantock, sr. (68-686, 7 TDs rushing); LB Tommy Feller, sr. (48 tackles, 8 for loss); WR/KR Andy Henry, sr. (27-559, 10 TDs receiving); TE Jacob Hutchins, sr. (10-123 receiving); WR/DB Zach Martins, sr. (11-184, 3 TDs receiving; 20 tackles, 3 int.); C/DT Dustin Smith, sr. (18 tackles, 3 for loss); LB John Conner, sr. (33 tackles); PK Quinn Treiber, sr. (32-33 PATs).

Washington - The Warriors have won two straight since consecutive losses to Wahlert and Kennedy. Senior RB Will Griffin played in his first game of the season (ankle surgery) last week against City High and had 51 yards in 19 carries. He is a speed burner and a difference maker on offense. Flynn Heald has a conference-best 49 receptions, including 21 in the loss to Kennedy. Senior wideout Ryan Cain, who had missed most of the first four games (collarbone), caught the winning touchdown pass last week. Top players: RB Will Griffin, sr. (19-51 rushing); QB Braedon Tovey, sr. (74-134-10-1047, 8 TDs passing; 30-155, 2 TDs rushing); WR/CB Flynn Heald, sr. (49-761, 4TDs receiving); RB Mitch Bredeson, jr. (97-475, 4 TDs rushing); FB/S David Tann, sr. (47-438, 5 TDs rushing; 52 tackles, 7 for loss, 2 int.);  RB Walter Short, jr. (50-305, 4 TDs rushing); OL Storhm Henry, sr. (16 tackles); T/LB Sean Bredl, sr. (48 tackles, 4 for loss); LB/PK Michael Daughtery, sr. (36 tackles; 25-26 PATs, 1-1 FGs); P Michael Peterson (9-47.0).

Jefferson (0-3, 0-6) at Prairie (0-4, 0-6)

Site: John Wall Field

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

TV: MC22 (Tape delay; Saturday at 9:30 p.m., Sunday at 12 a.m. and 7 p.m.)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Storyline - One of these teams is going to win a game. Jefferson owns the state's longest losing streak in Class 4A with 19 straight losses dating back to a Sept. 25, 2009, win over Dubuque Senior. Prairie is seeking its first win under first-year coach Mike Morrissey.

Jefferson - The J-Hawks were shutout for the first time this season in a 32-0 loss to Kennedy last Friday. They have been outscored 240-46 in their six games and have been particularly susceptible to the run, . The J-Hawks have allowed 1,567 yards rushing, an average 261 per game. The J-Hawks have moved QB Alex Baxter to RB to shore up the shortage caused by injuries, although senior Austin Short returned two weeks ago. Sophomore Layne Sullivan is the starter at QB. Top players: QB/RB/S Alex Baxter, sr. (39-76-2-366, 1 TD passing; 60-240 rushing; 4-64 receiving); RB Austin Short, sr. (58-197 rushing); RB Kyle Mann, sr. (30-176, 2 TDs rushing); C Ryan Eivins, sr.; WR/CB Christian Knox, sr. (22-237, 1 TD receiving); FB/LB Tanner Lund, sr. (5-51 receiving; 24 tackles); TE Austin Goodell, sr. (14-166, 1 TD); QB/LB Jordan Dee, sr. (5-7-1-88 passing; 40 tackles); RB/LB Drake Allen, jr. (14-36, 1 TD rushing; 27 tackles); QB/S Layne Sullivan, so. (19-38-0-224, 1 TD passing; 24 tackles).

Prairie - The Hawks suffered a disappointing 22-14 loss at Waterloo East last Friday. Prairie's six opponents have a combined 28-8 record and none have a losing record. The Hawks rolled up 483 yards of total offense in a 41-28 loss to No. 1 Cedar Falls, but in the three games since then have managed just 418 yards of offense. The Prairie offense is averaging 252.5 yards per game and the defense is allowing 390.2. Top players: RB Zach Witte, sr. (42-177, 1 TD rushing); QB Jace Hanna, sr. (50-106-5-741, 3 TDs passing; 42-(-32) rushing); QB Peyton Wagner, jr. (8-17-0-149, 3 TDs passing; 28-138, 2 TDs rushing; 7-92 receiving); WR/LB Jarred Edmonds, jr. (11-220, 3 TDs receiving; 1-46 rushing; 45 tackles); PK/LB Austin Reutzel, sr. (11-11 PATs, 1-1 FG; 35 tackles); RB/LB Cam Rathje, jr. (23-111, 1 TD rushing; 54 tackles); DB Bryce Alberts, sr. (43 tackles).

Waterloo East (3-2, 4-2) at Xavier (2-2, 3-3)

Site: Saints Field

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Radio: KMRY (AM-1450, FM-93.1)

Storyline - East is a team on a roll, with four straight wins. Xavier, meanwhile, is in a three-game skid with all three losses to top 10 ranked teams. East Desmond VanArsdale does not throw the ball exceptionally well (he has completed 35.2 percent of his passes), but is a gifted runner. Xavier needs a win tonight to get back into the playoff picture.

Waterloo East - The Trojans have won four straight since back-to-back losses to Iowa City West and Cedar Falls to open the season. They have outscored Jefferson, Hempstead, Waterloo West and Prairie by a combined 113-54. The combined record for those four teams, however, is 1-23. East qualified for last year's playoffs after a lengthy drought. Top players: QB Desmond VanArsdale, jr. (31-88-8-598, 4 TDs passing; 82-604, 8 TDs rushing); RB Aaron Taylor, jr. (67-471, 2 TDs rushing); RB Corshundous Love, sr. (68-342, 5 TDs rushing; 8-75 receiving); WR LeTray Reed, sr. (11-214, 4TDs receiving); LB Russell Jones, jr. (65 tackles); LB Jordan Johnson, jr. (63 tackles, 3 for loss).

Xavier - The Saints were manhandled the past three weeks by Iowa City High, Cedar Falls and Iowa City West. The Saints allowed only 58.7 yards rushing per game in shutting out their first three foes, but surrendered 400 yards rushing to City High, 256 to Cedar Falls and 175 to Iowa City West and were outscored 128-50. On offense, senior Carter Valentine has five 100-yard games and is second in the Metro in rushing with 700 yards. Top players: RB Carter Valentine, sr. (131-700, 5 TDs rushing); QB Reggie Schulte, jr. (65-107-9-885, 7 TDs passing); WR Jordan Hoffman, sr. (10-174, 3 TDs); WR Corbin Woods, jr. (20-264, 2 TDs receiving); TE/DE Kevin Hosch, sr. (8-95, 1 TD receiving; 19 tackles, 3 for loss); FB Matt Hansen, sr. (35-162, 3 TDs rushing); RB/DB Jordan Weber, sr. (11-282 receiving; 32 tackles, 6 for loss); LB Craig Murtha, jr. (30 tackles); PK Chad Gilmer, sr. (15-16 PATs).

DeWitt Central (2-2, 2-4) at Marion (2-2, 4-2)

Site: Thomas Park

Time: 7:30 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5:15 p.m.

Storyline - Marion is looking to get back into the winning column after being stunned by Center Point-Urbana last Friday night. This game starts a difficult three-game stretch to end the season. While DeWitt Central is 2-4, the Sabers own a win over district power Union. The Indians close out the season with DeWitt, at Union and at home against district co-leader Maquoketa. A win against the Sabers would go a long way toward qualifying the Indians for the playoffs.

DeWitt Central - The Sabers have been beaten the last two weeks by district co-leaders Maquoketa and Western Dubuque by a combined score of 67-14. They managed only 71 total yards in a 36-0 loss to Maquoketa. DeWitt played Solon and Fairfield in non-district play, so is no stranger to a tussle. The Sabers run the ball. They are averaging 247 yards rushing and 39 yards passing per game. Junior Mitch Green took over at QB last week and passed for 99 yards. Top players: QB Mitch Green, jr. (9-20-0-99 passing; 16-7 rushing); QB Chris Lubben, sr. (12-38-5-135 passing; 79-382, 3 TDs rushing); RB/LB Austin Lechtenberg, jr. (57-341, 5 TDs rushing; 28 tackles); WR Chris Keitel, jr. (4-76 receiving); LB Anthony Green, sr. (37 tackles); DL Joe Carber, sr. (33 tackles, 7 for loss).

Marion - The Indians played lethargic against winless CPU and got bit last week. Senior RB Colton Storla cracked 100 yards for the fourth time this season, but his 109 yards were a far cry from the 573 he piled up in scoring 10 touchdowns the two previous weeks. Storla is the Metro's leading rusher with 846 yards. He ran for more than 1,200 yards a year ago and is a three-year starter. Hunter Banes leads Class 3A with six interceptions. Top players: RB Colton Storla, sr. (123-846, 15 TDs rushing); QB Cale Cannoy, sr. (24-59-4-318, 2 TDs passing); FB/LB Jake McDonald, sr. (23-159 rushing; 85 tackles, 18 for loss); RB/LB Trev Biery, jr. (41-252 rushing; 30 tackles); RB Tyler Gunderson, jr. (23-139, 3 TDs rushing; 4-117, 1 TD receiving); TE Ethen Herren, xx. (8-70 receiving; 25 tackles); OL Zach Borens, jr.; DB Hunter Banes, sr. (40 tackles, 6 for loss, 6 int.).
