Kennedy defeats winless Waterloo West

WATERLOO - It was the same old song and dance for the Waterloo West football team Friday night at Memorial Stadium.

The winless Wahawks (0-8) hung tough early before falling to Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 42-19.

Kennedy (4-4) clinched a berth in the Class 4A playoffs.

West's Dequayvious Marion rushed for 230 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries.

"This was the first time this season (Martin) was full strength," Waterloo West Coach Lonnie Moore said. "You see when he's full strength what he can do. He's got some talent. It was a great individual effort."

Shawn Bowers added 62 yards on the ground and 106 yards through the air for the Wahawks, but it was all for naught as West High punished itself in crucial situations with nine penalties and three turnovers.

"That's been killing us all season," Moore said. "We've got to minimize those things to be successful."

The Cougars made their fair share of mistakes as well, but the Wahawks simply could not make Kennedy pay for its errors.

"We've been able to play pretty clean football all year," Kennedy Coach Tim Lewis said. "We just weren't playing the way we have been all year.

"Defensively we couldn't stop them. It very well could have been a win (for West) had we not been able to put some points on the board. They were doing some things offensively that we thought we were ready for."

Kennedy's Shaquille Davis muffed the opening kickoff and West started at the Cougar 31-yard line. On the next play, however, Martin was on the wrong end of a big hit and lost the ball.

Four plays later, Kennedy quarterback Chico Lizarraga found Trevor Heitland for a 61-yard score. Heitland was wide open on the touchdown play for a 6-0 lead.

Martin would rebound on the next drive, scampering 68 yards to the Kennedy 18. On the next play, West quarterback Shawn Bowers kept the ball on an option and scrambled for a touchdown and the Wahawks grabbed a 7-6 lead.

Early in the second quarter, West was punting from its own 38 when it ran into trouble. The snap sailed over punter Jon Schmadeke's head and he was stuffed by the Cougars after recovering the ball at the 2-yard line.

Alex Hillyer scored two plays later and added the two-point converstion himself to put the Cougars up for good, 14-7.

Heitland scored on a 2-yard run to make it 21-7, but Martin answered with a 19-yard touchdown to make it 21-13. Lizarraga scored on a 1-yard run to give the Cougars a 28-13 advantage in the third quarter.

West pulled within 28-19 on a 48-yard touchdown by Martin, but that's as close as it got.

Hillyer scored on a 5-yard run to make it 35-19, and Lizarraga closed the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown.

Heitland carried the ball 17 times for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Lizarraga completed 7 of 13 passes for 193 yards and one touchdown. Heitland caught three passes for 111 yards, giving him more than 100 yards as a runner and receiver.

West trailed 35-19 in the fourth quarter when Martin returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown, but a holding penalty negated the play.
