Linn-Mar bowlers looking for return to state

Jeremy Moser is the girls bowling coach at Linn-Mar High School, but he's also a 37-year-old college student.

His bowlers like to tease him about that.

"The kids are giving me a hard time about being in school and having to go home and do homework at the same time they do after practice," he said with a laugh.

It gives the coach and players two things in common: Bowling and homework, both of which they take seriously.

Moser is taking a full load of classes at Mount Mercy University in order to get his teaching degree. He's currently working at Discovery Living, a group home in Cedar Rapids for adults with disabilities, but his goal is to become a classroom teacher.

So right now he's a student, a coach and a staff member at Discovery Living. "It keeps me hopping," he said.

Moser runs a successful bowling program at Linn-Mar. The Lions finished eighth at the Class 2A state tournament last year and appear to have another strong team.

"I'm excited about it," he said. "I've got a lot of returners."

Stacey Schwarzenstein placed eighth in the individual standings at the state tournament last year and leads the way for the Lions. Nicole McMahon and McKenzie Routhe are also back from last year's squad.

"A lot of the kids have improved over the summer, so we should be that far ahead of where we were last year," Moser said. "I think we probably have the potential to go to state again."
