Xavier Coach Tom Lilly had several goals for Tuesday night's game against Waterloo East.

He wanted to make a smooth transition from defense to offense and play up-tempo. He also wanted to use a zone defense, which is uncharacteristic for the Saints, to stay out of foul trouble.

Mission accomplished.

Xavier drubbed Waterloo East, 82-25, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls basketball game at Xavier.

The Saints scored the first 23 points of the contest and led 29-1 after the first quarter. A free throw by Shakarie Baker-Bruce ended the scoring drought for Waterloo East near the end of the quarter, following numerous substitutions by Xavier.

Emily Walvoord led the Saints with 16 points. Annie Dale scored 14 points, Kayla Armstrong chipped in with 12 points and Katlyn Andersen scored 10.

Xavier led, 46-8, at halftime.

Symone Robinson led Waterloo East with 12 points. Turnovers doomed the Trojans, as Xavier took advantage of most of the miscues.

Alex Bartz, who set a school record for blocked shots against Dubuque Senior last week, intimidated shooters from East High. Lisa Boomgarden, Ashley Stulken and Walvoord also blocked shots.

Lilly is looking toward a tough schedule as Xavier moves toward the holiday break with road contests against Kennedy, West Des Moines Dowling and Iowa City High. The Saints also host Iowa City West and Davenport Assumption before the holiday break.

“We have a lot of smaller kids that will need to keep playing 'bigger' as we move through the season," he said. "We will be forced to adjust when we play these taller teams in the near future."
