Lions pin Jefferson and Waterloo East

The fifth-ranked Linn-Mar Lions took care of both Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Waterloo East, recording a combined 10 pins in two victories Thursday night at Jefferson.

Linn-Mar crushed East, 70-12, then took care of Jefferson, 57-15. Jefferson whipped East, 66-9, in the evening's first match.

“We did a decent job as a whole team,” Linn-Mar Coach Doug Streicher said. “We did a good job getting better as the match went on.”

The Lions, who feature six ranked wrestlers in their individual weight classes, will face stiffer competition next week at the Battle of Waterloo dual meet tournament. The Lions will face some of the top teams in the state in Waterloo, but their coach is not looking ahead just yet.

“It (Battle of Waterloo) is over a week away,” Streicher said. “We are preparing for Saturday and will deal with the Battle of Waterloo next week.”

The Lions are in the Five Seasons Duals Saturday.

The Lions got pins from four of their ranked wrestlers against the Trojans. The pins, along with seven forfeits from Waterloo East, helped propel the Lions.

The Lions' ranked wrestlers also took care of the J-Hawk wrestlers as three of them secured pins. Despite the convincing team win Josh Pederson, ranked sixth in his weight class, was almost upset by J-Hawk senior Tyler Boesenberg. Pederson needed overtime to clip Boesenberg, 5-3.

The Lions will likely get stonger soon when Mark Atwater and Mitch Wantock return.

“Atwater will return shortly and Mitch should be back after break,” Streicher said. “It will make us even stronger and get rid of the forfeit."

The lions had to forfeit twice at 182.

Despite the loss to Linn-Mar, the J-Hawks got some strong performances.

“Linn-Mar is talented even without the guys they were missing,” Jefferson Coach Dick Briggs said. “I don’t like getting whooped, but we will keep battling.”

The J-Hawks got a win from freshman Luke Sedlacek and a pin from sophomore Josh Allen against the Lions.

“Sedlacek is just a freshman, it’s a nice win for a freshman,” Briggs said. “Allen got a nice win. He is pretty green; it was nice for him to get a pin.”

Senior Mic Vesey also had a great meet taking Linn-Mar's Justin Green to double overtime before losing, 2-1. Vesey got a pin against Waterloo East.

The young J-Hawks took care of business against East, taking advantage of seven pins and three forfeits.
