Three Metro teams will have the chance to play in the Class 4A girls state basketball tournament next month at Des Moines.

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released regional tournament pairings Monday. Of the Metro's six Class 4A teams, four (Kennedy, Linn-Mar, Prairie and Xavier) were assigned to Region 3, one (Jefferson) to Region 2 and one (Washington) to Region 5.

Prairie, Xavier and Washington all received first-round byes and will have to win two games to reach the state tournament. The other teams will have to play three.

Kennedy hosts Linn-Mar in a first-round game Feb. 15. The winner plays at Xavier in the semifinals Feb. 18. In the other semifinal, also on Feb, 18, Prairie hosts the winner of the first-round game between Dubuque Hempstead and Dubuque Senior. The regional final is Feb. 21 at Linn-Mar.

Prairie was ranked No. 8 in the latest Class 4A poll and Xavier was No. 9.

Jefferson hosts Marshalltown in a Region 2 first-round game Feb, 15. If the J-Hawks win they play at No. 6 Ames in the semifinals Feb. 18. The regional final is Feb. 21 at Marshalltown. The foe will be No. 13 Cedar Falls, No. 14 Waterloo West or Waterloo East.

No. 5 Washington hosts Clinton or North Scott in the semifinals Feb. 18. The regional final is Feb. 21 at Kennedy against No. 10 Iowa City High, Pleasant Valley or Bettendorf.

Marion is one of two ranked teams in Class 3A Region 5, but No. 2 Davenport Assumption is the other. The 12th-ranked Indians host Vinton-Shellsburg in the first round Feb. 15. If they win they host Center Point-Urbana or Anamosa on Feb. 18 in the semifinals. Assumption is on the other side of the bracket and it will host the regional final Feb. 21.

Cedar Valley Christian, in its first year of playing in the tournament, is in the same Class 1A region with No. 1 North Mahaska. The Huskies open tournament play Feb. 9 at Lisbon.

All tournament games start at 7 p.m.

The state tournament runs Feb. 27 through March 3 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Eight teams qualify in each of the four classes.
