Womochil could be volunteer with Cyclones

Jim Womochil could have an opportunity to join the Iowa State football program as a volunteer unpaid member of the staff, the Metro Sports Report learned Monday.

Womochil, 45, resigned Friday as the head coach at Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School to pursue an opportunity in college football. He compiled a 22-78 record in 11 years with the J-Hawks and ended his tenure with a 22-game losing streak.

Womochil declined comment Friday on which college jobs he was pursuing. He ruled out the possibility of joining the Cyclones as their new defensive backfield coach to succeed Bob Elliott, who has left ISU for a position at Notre Dame.

A volunteer unpaid member of the staff could have a variety of duties, whereas the person who is hired to replace Elliott will be a full-time paid member of the staff.

Womochil could not be reached for comment Monday.
