Jerry Kiwala of Cedar Rapids will receive a media award from the Iowa High School Athletic Association for his work in broadcasting.

He will be honored on Friday, March 9 at the boys state basketball tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Kiwala has worked with Mediacom since 2004 on the company's football and basketball broadcasts. Prior to that, he spent 11 years as the sports director at WMT and also worked at KMRY.

Kiwala played for West Liberty High School in the 1978 state basketball tournament and was a quarterback at Simpson College. He received a communications degree from Iowa in 1985.

Kiwala spent 18 years as a basketball official and has been a para-educator in Cedar Rapids schools since 2007. He and his wife Debra have two sons, Brock and Adam.
