Rematch scuttled by Boyden-Hull - Class 1A semis

DES MOINES -- Danville upheld its half of the bargain, but Storm Lake St. Mary's came up short in its bid for a championship rematch of a year ago.

Top-ranked Danville (27-0) finally shrugged off game Nodaway Valley in the fourth quarter and pulled away for a 65-49 win in a Class 1A semifinal of the boys state basketball tournament Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena.

Defending champion Storm Lake St. Mary's (26-1), meanwhile, took it on the chin from third-seeded Boyden-Hull (25-2), 69-61, in the other 1A semifinal.

Danville will meet Boyden-Hull for the Class 1A title Friday at 6 p.m. (KCRG 9.2). Nodaway Valley and St. Mary's play for third place at 10 a.m.

Danville led Nodaway Valley by three points after three quarters. The Bears stretched their led to 10 points before a jumper and layup by Nodaway Valley's TJ Bower chopped the lead back to 55-49 with 3:35 to play.

Danville scored the last 10 points of the game -- eight by Steven Soukup -- to close out the win.

Soukup scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Collin Bartsch scored 14 points and Michael Soukup 13.

Alex Welsch scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Nodaway valley. Bower added 15 points and seven rebounds.

BOYDEN-HULL 69, STORM LAKE ST. MARY'S 61 -- Boyden-Hull blistered the nets with 62.2 percent shooting and upset the defending state champ.

Bryce Moss made 10 of 11 shots and led Boyden-Hull with 22 points. Taylor Francis had 18 points, and Brandt Van Roekel and Nathan Alexander scored 13 apiece.

Luke Lenhart led St. Mary's with 17 points. Kennedy Drey added 11.

Boyden-Hull made 13 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter to cement the win.
