Western Dubuque bounces Heelan - Class 3A semis

DES MOINES -- TJ Lake scored 15 points and Cameron James added 14 points and nine rebounds Thursday night to lead Western Dubuque past Sioux City Heelan, 58-43, and into the Class 3A state championship game.

Western Dubuque (24-2) will play Mount Pleasant (25-1) in Saturday night's championship at 6:05 p.m. (KCRG 9.2). Defending state champion Heelan (18-7) will play Grinnell (21-5) in the third place game at 12:05 p.m. on Saturday.

Western Dubuque used a 16-0 spurt during the second quarter that turned a three-point lead into a 19-point margin. Lake scored seven points during the flurry.

Heelan never got closer than 10 points in the second half.

Hunter Westhoff added 12 points for the Bobcats.

Shane Graves' 15 points paced Heelan.

Both teams shot around 40 percent. Western Dubuque outscored Heelan 20-2 at the free throw line. The Crusaders shot only seven free throws.

MOUNT PLEASANT 53, GRINNELL 33 -- Mount Pleasant held Grinnell to eight points in the second half and raced into the Class 3A championship game.

Jordan Ashton scored 22 points, Nick Lyon added 13 points and eight rebounds, and Blake Vandenberg grabbed 10 rebounds for Mount Pleasant (25-1).

Eli Dunne scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Grinnell.

Mount Pleasant led 26-25 at halftime, but outscored Grinnell 14-4 in the third quarter and 13-4 in the fourth.
