Brooks in good humor after operation

Bob Brooks has wires and tubes connected to various parts of his body and there are several monitors in his hospital room.

"It looks like we could broadcast worldwide," the legendary broadcaster said Thursday with his customary good humor.

Brooks, 85, had a medical procedure Tuesday night due to complications from a hiatal hernia that he's had for several years. He was in surgery at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics for 3 1/2 hours.

"I'm sore and I'm hurting and I've got wires all in-and-out of me," he reported.

Brooks expects to stay at the hospital until sometime next week while he recovers from the operation. Susie Brooks, Bob's wife, wants people to know that he did not suffer a stroke and that the medical problem had nothing to do with his heart.

Brooks said he suffered from indigestion Tuesday afternoon, but felt good enough to attend Iowa's basketball game against Dayton in the NIT tournament Tuesday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

"I had asked John Streif (Iowa's trainer) to give me a couple of Tums before the game," he said. "My problem didn't get any better."

Brooks said he felt pain in his shoulder and lower abdomen during the game, but nonetheless attended the post-game press conference and asked questions. Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery, among others, noticed during the press conference that Brooks did not appear to be feeling well.

Brooks was taken to the UI training room, where Streif examined him and summoned a doctor who was in the arena.

"They convinced me that I should go to the hospital. So I did," Brooks said. "The rest is history."

Brooks was taken by ambulance from Carver-Hawkeye Arena to the UI hospital, which is just a few blocks from the arena. Brooks appreciates all the help and attention he received Tuesday night and is glad the hospital was nearby.

"I'm lucky. And blessed," he said.

Brooks is the sports director at radio station KMRY in Cedar Rapids, does shows for Mediacom and also contributes a weekly column for the Metro Sports Report.

He is recovering in Room 106 at the UI hospital.
