Wes Washpun leaves Tennessee basketball team

Wes WashpunWes WashpunFormer Cedar Rapids Washington guard Wes Washpun is leaving the University of Tennessee basketball program after one unproductive year with the Volunteers.

Washpun asked Tennessee Coach Cuonzo Martin to release him from his scholarship so he could transfer, the Associated Press reported Monday.

Washpun played in most of Tennessee's non-conference games in November and December, but played sparingly in Southeastern Conference contests. He scored 16 points in 17 games overall for an average of 0.9 points per game.

Washpun shot 6 for 21 from the floor (28.6 percent) and was 0 for 3 on 3-pointers. He made four of eight free throws for 50 percent. He had 23 assists, 22 rebounds, 15 turnovers, eight steals and seven blocked shots.

Martin originally recruited Washpun to play for him at Missouri State, then offered him a scholarship to Tennessee after he succeeded Bruce Pearl as head coach last year.

Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery made a pitch for Washpun last spring, but by then Washpun was leaning heavily to Tennessee.

Tennessee finished 19-15 overall this season and 10-6 in the SEC. The Volunteers reached the second round of the NIT.
