Morgan Allee having a blast with Tritons

Morgan Allee had her own fan club at the Kirkwood Community College softball field Monday afternoon.

They came to see the former Jefferson High School star play for Iowa Central Community College against Kirkwood on a sunny, breezy day.

"Aunts, uncles, grandma, grandpas, brother, sister, mom and dad," said Allee, glancing over her shoulder. "I absolutely love it.

"I kind of miss it when they're not there, because they were at every high school game. I really enjoy it when they're at the games."

Allee made all-state at Jefferson in 2010 and was the Mississippi Valley Conference Player of the Year, setting the stage for a remarkable career at Iowa Central in Fort Dodge.

She hit a robust .524 last season as a freshman and was named a junior college All-American, and she began Monday's doubleheader against Kirkwood with an incredible .646 batting average. She's twice been named the national Player of the Week this season.

Allee is a rare combination of power and speed on a softball field. She had three home runs and 36 RBIs in the first 26 games this season, along with a bunch of doubles and triples, and complemented her big bat with 38 stolen bases in those first 26 outings.

"She changes the game once she gets on base," said Iowa Central Coach Josh Sandin. "When she gets on base, it really helps our other hitters.

"She can do it all. That's why we have her at the top of the lineup, because she ignites us, she gets us going."

Allee hit a couple of line drives to center field that were caught for outs in the first game Monday, then opted for a different approach when she led off the top of the fifth inning of a 1-1 game. She bunted for a base hit and later scored when she stole third base and dashed home for a 2-1 lead when the shortstop couldn't handle the throw at third.

Iowa Central proceeded to win the opener, 4-1.

"I'd rather get a base hit than hit a home run, because when I get a base hit I get to run the bases," she said.

Allee will play NCAA Division I softball at Indiana State next season. She had other offers, but none of them topped the Sycamores.

"I had a few, but Indiana State was my top choice," she said. "I really like the program there and I really like the coach. I'm pretty excited."

Allee said she plans to study special education at Indiana State and also would like to coach some day.

New Indiana State Coach Shane Bouman stopped by Kirkwood on Monday to watch Allee play. Bouman was the head coach at Iowa Lakes Community College last year and previously served as the pitching coach at the University of Iowa.

Bouman watched Allee play for Iowa Central last year and liked what he saw.

"The week he got the job (at Indiana State) he called us about Morgan," said Sandin. "I think his recruiting pitch was, 'If you want to lose games, don't come here.' That kind of sold her right there."

Sandin said Allee is highly competitive, even when it comes to winning a game of pepper. "It's rubbed off on our team and been a good thing," he said.

In addition to being a major threat on offense, Allee also excels at shortstop with great range, terrific footwork and a powerful arm. "She makes plays that most people can't," said Sandin.

Kirkwood won the second game of the doubleheader, 2-1. That left fourth-ranked Iowa Central at 28-5 overall and 6-2 in the conference and put No. 14 Kirkwood at 23-4 overall and 8-2 in the league.
