Vis named Kennedy girls basketball coach

PDF

Cedar Rapids Kennedy has picked Tony Vis as its new girls basketball coach.

Vis has been the head coach at Harlan High School the past seven years. He led Harlan to the semifinals of the Class 3A state tournament in 2006 and took the Cyclones to the state tournament again in 2009.

Vis was the head coach at Hudson High School from 1999 to 2003 and led the team to the semifinals of the Class 2A state tournament his final season there.

He also was the head coach at Audubon High School for two years in between his stints at Hudson and Harlan.

Vis succeeds Dennis Roloff, who was not offered a contract by Kennedy following the 2011-12 season. Roloff compiled a 314-165 record in 21 years as Kennedy's head coach, with five trips to the Class 4A state tournament and two trips to the semifinals.

Vis is a social studies teacher and also has coached soccer.

"Tony has an amazing reputation of being a strong educator - whether in the classroom, on the pitch or on the court," Aaron Stecker, Kennedy's athletic director, stated in a press release. "His reputation is one of high expectation, high work ethic and a passion for teaching and coaching young people in an effort to push them beyond even their own expecations."

Vis has two daughters that played for Harlan last season. Brianna Vis, who will be a senior, averaged 4.4 points and 3.0 assists per game. Mariah Vis played sparingly on the varsity squad as a sophomore. Harlan was 10-11.
